Both phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT and mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascades play an important role in cell proliferation, survival, angiogenesis, and metastasis of tumor cells. In the present report, we investigated the effects of licochalcone A (LA), a flavonoid extracted from licorice root, on the PI3K/AKT/mTOR and MAPK activation pathways in human gastric cancer BGC-823 cells. LA increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, which is associated with the induction of apoptosis as characterized by positive Annexin V binding and activation of caspase-3, and cleavage of poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP).

Recombinant human annexin A5 (Anx5) is known to protect cardiac function during endotoxemia, although the underlying mechanisms have yet to be elucidated. In this study, we demonstrated that Anx5 could repair the disrupted cardiomyocyte adherens junctions and improve the myocardial contractile function in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endotoxemia. Mechanistic studies revealed that Anx5 could antagonize the disassociation between p120-catenin (p120) and N-cadherin as well as the dephosphorylation of p120 in LPS-treated cardiomyocytes.

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) heterodimerizes with the aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (Arnt) for transcriptional regulation. We generated three N-terminal deletion constructs of the human AhR of 12-24 kDa in size--namely D1, D2, and D3--to suppress the Arnt function. We observed that all three deletions interact with the human Arnt with similar affinities.

Unlabelled: Osteoporosis and obesity are severe public health problems in an aging society, and as we all know, bone mineral density (BMD) is closely related to fat mass (FM) and fat distribution. However, studies have long focused on pre- or post-menopausal women, and its presence in men has been underestimated. To investigate the differential impact of fat on BMD, we characterized body composition of northern Chinese men and examined the relationship with BMD according to body mass index (BMI) levels.

CXC195 showed strongest protective effects among the ligustrazine derivatives in cells and prevented apoptosis induced by H2O2 injury. We recently demonstrated that CXC195 protected against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury by its antioxidant activity. However, whether the anti-apoptotic action of CXC195 is involved in cerebral I/R injury is unknown.

Introduction: Adjunctive complex fractionated atrial electrograms (CFAE) ablation or ganglionated plexi (GP) ablation have been proposed as new strategies to increase the elimination of AF, but the difference between CFAE/GP ablation and pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), as well as the combined effect of CFAE/GP plus PVI ablation were unclear. This meta-analysis was designed to determine whether adjunctive cardiac autonomic denervation (CAD) was effective for the elimination of AF, and whether CAD alone was superior to PVI in AF patients.
Methods: A systemic literature search in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (CCRT) was performed and controlled trials comparing the effect of PVI plus CFAE/GP ablation with PVI, as well as CFAE/GP ablation with PVI were collected.

Background: The development of collateral vessels, which is important to prevent ischemic tissues from cell death, is impaired in patients with diabetes mellitus. The process is regulated by many positive and negative factors. The purpose of the study is to test the hypothesis that stroke patients with diabetes have angiogenesis deficiency and the possible mechanism is hyperglycemia attenuates neovascularization by downregulating proliferative properties of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and upregulating negative properties of angiostatin.
