Background: As a type of atherosclerotic lesion affecting the peripheral vascular system, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) has an elevated disability rate and seriously affects patients' quality of life. Estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) is an alternative indicator of pulse wave velocity and is closely linked with atherosclerosis. However, the link between ePWV and PAD is unelucidated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how changes in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels affect the prognosis of patients with primary liver cancer (PLC) after they undergo radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
  • Data was collected from 165 patients treated with RFA between 2018 and 2023, utilizing statistical methods like chi-square tests and Cox regression to analyze survival outcomes.
  • Results indicated that both normal ALP and GGT levels correlated with significantly better survival rates compared to abnormal levels, with ALP and GGT identified as key independent prognostic factors for overall survival in PLC patients post-treatment.

The anti-leukemia activity and mechanisms of shikonin: a mini review.

Front Pharmacol

November 2023

Department of Geriatrics, Jilin Geriatrics Clinical Research Center, The First Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, China.

Leukemia encompasses a group of highly heterogeneous diseases that pose a serious threat to human health. The long-term outcome of patients with leukemia still needs to be improved and new effective therapeutic strategies continue to be an unmet clinical need. Shikonin (SHK) is a naphthoquinone derivative that shows multiple biological function includes anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic effects.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative condition worldwide, with amyloid (Aβ) fibrils presenting as its main pathological feature. This study investigated whether Ginsenoside Compound K (CK) has activity against Aβ and its mechanism in reducing synaptic damage and cognitive impairment. The binding capacity of CK to Aβ42 and Nrf2/Keap1 was determined using molecular docking.

Protective Effect of Shengmaiyin in Myocardial Hypertrophy-Induced Rats: A Genomic Analysis by 16S rDNA.

Evid Based Complement Alternat Med

September 2022

Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Biomacromolecules of Chinese Medicine, Jilin Ginseng Academy, Changchun University of Chinese Medicine, Changchun, Jilin 130021, China.

Background: The gut-cardiac axis theory provides new insights into the complex mechanisms of cardiac hypertrophy and provides new therapeutic targets. Cardiac hypertrophy is a risk factor for heart failure. Shengmaiyin (SMY) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula with clear effects in the treatment and prevention of cardiac hypertrophy, but the mechanism by which it improves cardiac hypertrophy is still unclear.

We investigated the anti-aging effects of velvet antler polypeptide on D-galactose (D-gal)-induced aging mice. D-gal-induced aging mice were established and randomly divided into five groups, the control, model, vitamin E (VE), velvet antler polypeptide low-dose and velvet antler polypeptide high-dose groups. The Morris water maze test was used to evaluate the learning and memory abilities of aging mice.

October 2021

Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Biomacromolecules of Chinese Medicine, Jilin Ginseng Academy, Changchun University of Chinese Medicine, Changchun, Jilin 130021, China.

Aging affects the brain function in elderly individuals, and Dushen Tang (DST) is widely used for the treatment of senile diseases. In this study, the protective effect of DST against memory impairment was evaluated through the Morris water maze (MWM) test and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A joint analysis was also performed using LC-MS metabolomics and the microbiome.

Expression of TMEM16A in Colorectal Cancer and Its Correlation With Clinical and Pathological Parameters.

Front Oncol

March 2021

Key Laboratory for Molecular and Chemical Genetics of Critical Human Diseases of Jilin Province, Second Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, China.

TMEM16A is a recently identified calcium-activated chloride channel (CaCC) and its overexpression contributes to tumorigenesis and progression in several human malignancies. However, little is known about expression of TMEM16A and its clinical significance in colorectal cancer (CRC). TMEM16A mRNA expression was determined by quantitative real time-PCR (qRT-PCR) in 67 CRC tissues and 24 para-carcinoma tissues.

Background: 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a common drug for hepatic carcinoma (HCC), but the drug resistance of clinical chemotherapy restricts its use. Studies have demonstrated that miRNA molecules can act as a chemoresistance regulator in drug resistance of tumors, whereas the role of miR-145 in the 5-FU-resistant HCC remains unclear.

Objective: To explore the prognostic value of miR-145 in HCC and its molecular mechanism in 5-FU-resistant HCC cells.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) has become a public health problem worldwide. Hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) is the most popular treatment for PMO at present, but the side effects, including increased risk of endometrial cancer and breast cancer, limit its clinical use. Therefore, finding a new medication with high efficiency and less side-effects is urgently required.

Ginsenoside compound K ameliorates Alzheimer's disease in HT22 cells by adjusting energy metabolism.

Mol Biol Rep

October 2019

Laboratory of Molecular Pharmacology, Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of BioMacromolecules of Chinese Medicine, Jilin Ginseng Academy, Changchun University of Chinese Medicine, Changchun, 130117, Jilin, China.

Energy metabolism disorders have been shown to exert detrimental effects on the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The ginsenoside compound K (CK), a major intestinal metabolite underlying the pharmacological actions of orally administered ginseng, has an ameliorating effect against AD, but the relevant molecular mechanism remains unclear. We hypothesized that the improvement of AD by CK is mediated by the energy metabolism signaling pathway induced by amyloid β peptide (Aβ) and tested this hypothesis in HT22 cells.

Introduction: Over 20% of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients seek medical attention for the first time when they are in the advanced stages of CRC. Thus, early and reliable detection of CRC is critical to early diagnosis of CRC. Protein disulfide isomerase A3 precursor (PDIA3) has been implicated in various types of cancers.

Atrazine (ATZ), a widely used triazine herbicide, has been detected in the surface and ground water even far from where it is applied. Recently, the biotoxicity of atrazine to the immune, reproductive and endocrine systems has been preliminarily observed in laboratory experiments and epidemiological research studies. In order to further comprehend the carcinogenic nature of ATZ, and models were established in this study to explore the effects of ATZ exposure on hepatocellular carcinoma.

Primary desmoplastic small round cell tumor of the duodenum.

Eur J Med Res

July 2014

General Surgery Department, Qian Wei Hospital of Jilin province, Changchun City, Jilin Province, China.

The desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is an extremely rare tumor that mainly affects adolescents and mostly involves the abdominal and pelvic peritoneum. A 14-year-old girl presented with intermittent epigastric pain; abdominal computed tomography and upper gastrointestinal barium X-ray revealed an 8 cm × 10 cm space-occupying mass in the duodenal region. The patient underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy and the final pathologic diagnosis was DSRCT.
