Neurogenetics

October 2023

Myelin Disorders Clinic, Pediatric Neurology Division, Children's Medical Center, Pediatrics Center of Excellence, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, No. 61, Gharib Street, Keshavarz Blvd, Tehran, 1419733151, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • Leukodystrophies (LDs) are neurological disorders affecting the white matter of the brain, and this study focuses on creating an Iranian LD Registry to analyze the clinical and genetic data of Persian patients.
  • From 680 patients registered between 2016-2019, 342 underwent diagnostic evaluations, with 245 ultimately diagnosed—24.5% in a hypomyelinating LD group and the rest in other categories.
  • Genetic testing revealed causal variants in 228 patients, with whole-exome sequencing (WES) being more effective (60.7% diagnostic rate) than single gene testing; lysosomal disorders were the most prevalent diagnoses.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcribed RNA molecules longer than 200 nucleotides in length that have no protein-coding potential. They are able to react with DNA, RNA, and protein. Hence they involve in regulating gene expression at the epigenetic, transcriptional, post-transcriptional, and translational levels.

Background: Growing evidence strongly indicates pivotal roles of gender differences in the occurrence and survival rate of patients with bladder cancer, with a higher incidence in males and poorer prognosis in females. Nevertheless, the molecular basis underlying gender-specific differences in bladder cancer remains unknown. The current study has tried to detect key genes contributing to gender differences in bladder cancer patients.

THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN COLORECTAL CANCER AND INDEX OF NUTRITIONAL QUALITY (INQ); A CASE-CONTROL STUDY.

Arq Gastroenterol

November 2023

Department of Community Nutrition, Faculty of Nutrition and Food Technology, National Nutrition and Food Technology Research Institute, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

•Is the Index of Nutritional Quality (INQ) associated with colon cancer? •This study compared the INQ of various dietary components between colorectal cancer patients and healthy controls. A total of 480 participants were enrolled in the study (160 patients with colorectal cancer as a case group and 320 healthy control). The results showed that CRC is significantly associated with INQ for some micronutrients.

Response investigation of a new polymer gel dosimeter based on ammonium salt through MRI technique.

Appl Radiat Isot

October 2023

Department of Medical Physics, School of Medicine, Radiation Biology Research Center, Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Increasing the use of polymer gel dosimetry (PGD) in radiotherapy requires reducing its toxicity. The toxicity of the PGD components causes risks for the users as well as the environment. The aim of this study is to produce a new PGD called PAGBIT (Polymer, Amps ammonium salt, Gelatin, BIs, Thpc) based on the nontoxic monomer of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid ammonium salt.

  • - This study examined how low-dose aspirin affects the levels of pro-inflammatory and pro-resolving mediators in the periapical fluid of patients with necrotic teeth.
  • - Participants were divided into aspirin and placebo groups, with periapical fluid collected before and after 7 days of treatment and analyzed for interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and aspirin triggered lipoxin (ATL) levels.
  • - Results showed that low-dose aspirin significantly reduced IL-1β and PGE2 levels while increasing ATL levels, suggesting its potential to modulate inflammation effectively.
