Background: The Sampson-NIH and Martin-Hopkins low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) equations are advocated as being superior to the Friedewald calculation. However, their mathematical complexity means they may have different biological and analytical variation when tracking LDL-C in the same patient. This study has established the biological variation (BV) of calculated and directly measured LDL-C (dLDL-C) in patients taking equivalent doses of a long (atorvastatin) and short (simvastatin) half-life statin.

Background: Advanced glycation end products (AGE) and their receptors (RAGE) have been implicated in developing periodontal complications in diabetic patients. This study aimed to identify salivary AGE, RAGE, soluble RAGE (sRAGE), and active-matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) levels at varying glycemic levels in periodontitis patients.

Methods: Ninety-eight participants were categorized into uncontrolled DM-PD group (n = 27)-periodontitis patients with uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (glycated hemoglobin [HbA1c] ≥7%); controlled DM-PD group (n = 33)-periodontitis patients with controlled T2DM (HbA1c 5.

It is unclear whether physiological responses, such as muscle oxygen saturation (SmO), can be considered symmetrical during cycling. This knowledge has important practical implications for both training and performance assessment. The aim of this study was to determine whether oxygenation profiles in the three active muscles of both legs were symmetrical during cycling at different intensities.

Excitation-Dependent Anti-Thermal Quenching in Zero-Dimensional Manganese Bromides for Photoluminescence and X-Ray Scintillation.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

MIIT Key Laboratory of Advanced Display Materials and Devices, Institute of Optoelectronics and Nanomaterials, College of Materials Science and Engineering, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Nanjing, 210094, China.

One of the most significant challenges of luminescent materials is the thermal quenching (TQ) at high temperature. Understanding the correlation between crystal structure variation and photoluminescence (PL) quenching is significant to achieve anti-thermal quenching (anti-TQ) phosphors. Herein, we unveil a universal principle governing switchable TQ and anti-TQ behaviors in zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrid manganese bromides.

Unlabelled: The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance and need for accessible safe, effective, and versatile vaccine platforms. While approved SARS-CoV-2 vaccines have been instrumental in saving lives and reducing healthcare and economic burdens, the induction of mucosal immunity remains an unmet need. Here, we engineered and evaluated a non-replicating adenovirus 5 (rAd5)-based vaccine expressing the SARS-CoV-2 S1 subunit (rAd5-SARS2-S1).

Introduction: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by the Philadelphia chromosome and uncontrolled granulocyte production. While autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is commonly associated with lymphoproliferative disorders such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia, its occurrence in CML is rare, with only a few documented cases. Here, we report a case of concurrent chronic-phase CML and AIHA.

Genetic polymorphisms influencing antihypertensive drug responses.

Br J Pharmacol

February 2025

Department of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, QU Health, Qatar University, Doha, Qatar.

Hypertension is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease and its associated morbidity and mortality. The low efficacy observed with some anti-hypertensive therapies has been attributed partly to inter-individual genetic variability. This paper reviews the major findings regarding these genetic variabilities that modulate responses to anti-hypertensive therapies such as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), diuretics, calcium channel blockers (CCBs) and β-adrenoceptor blockers.
