We show that platinum displays a self-adjusting surface that is active for the hydrogenation of acetone over a wide range of reaction conditions. Reaction kinetics measurements under steady-state and transient conditions at temperatures near 350 K, electronic structure calculations employing density-functional theory, and microkinetic modeling were employed to study this behavior over supported platinum catalysts. The importance of surface coverage effects was highlighted by evaluating the transient response of isopropanol formation following either removal of the reactant ketone from the feed, or its substitution with a similarly structured species.

Positive surgical margins, or cancer cells found at the boundary of an excised tumor mass, are a significant problem in the management of many cancers resulting in worsened patient outcomes. The problem is exacerbated in organ sites such as the prostate, where unnecessarily wide local excisions can result in significant deterioration of post-operative quality of life due to collateral damage to neighboring structures. Low temperature limits the photochemical efficiency of photosystems in wheat plants. To test the effect of salt priming on the photosynthetic electron transport in wheat under low temperature, the germinating seeds of a winter wheat cv. We investigate three kinds of heat produced in a system and a bath strongly coupled via an interaction Hamiltonian. By studying the energy flows between the system, the bath, and their interaction, we provide rigorous definitions of two types of heat, Q_{S} and Q_{B}, from the energy loss of the system and the energy gain of the bath, respectively. This is in contrast to the equivalence of Q_{S} and Q_{B}, which is commonly assumed to hold in the weak-coupling regime.

The introduction of insertion-deletions (INDELs) by non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ) pathway underlies the mechanistic basis of CRISPR-Cas9-directed genome editing. Selective gene ablation using CRISPR-Cas9 is achieved by installation of a premature termination codon (PTC) from a frameshift-inducing INDEL that elicits nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) of the mutant mRNA. Here, by examining the mRNA and protein products of CRISPR targeted genes in a cell line panel with presumed gene knockouts, we detect the production of foreign mRNAs or proteins in ~50% of the cell lines.
