Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA), an active component derived from Salvia miltiorrhiza root, has been used to treat various ischemic cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. However, its impact on hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury remains unclear. Here, we addressed this issue by using a 90-minute partial liver ischemia model.

Novel polymeric nanoparticles containing tanshinone IIA for the treatment of hepatoma.

Novel polylactic acid nanoparticles containing tanshinone IIA (TS-PLA-NPs) were synthesized by a single oil-in-water emulsion/solvent evaporation method. In this study, the optimized nanoparticles were characterized for morphology, mean particle size, zeta potential, entrapment efficiency, drug-loading content, X-ray diffractometer measurement, and in vitro release. The obtained nanoparticles were spherical and intact.
