Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is a neurocutaneous syndrome with autosomal dominant mode of inheritance and has a high propensity to develop benign and malignant nervous system tumors. Although uncommon, case reports describing the association of NF-1 and breast cancer are available in the literature. We illustrate one such case of NF-1, with no family history of the disorder and presenting with multifocal invasive carcinoma of the right breast, in an attempt to describe the association between these two entities.

Background: Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (LNF) has been the gold standard for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), but the side effects of dysphagia and bloating have lead to interest in partial fundoplication as an alternative.

Aim: To compare the symptomatic and objective parameters after LNF and laparoscopic anterior partial fundoplication (LAPF) in patients with GERD.

Patients And Methods: The study was conducted in the Division of Minimal Access Surgery, Maulana Azad Medical College from June 2008 to October 2016.

During a screening program for antimicrobial compounds from underexplored habitats, a Gram-positive bacterium TD-032, was isolated from arid soil, Thar Desert (India), and analyzed for its morphological, physicochemical, and antimicrobial properties. The 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequence of the isolate was further studied for the novelty of γ-hyper variable region. TD-032 was grown in large-scale culture, and aqueous and organic solvent extracts analyzed for antimicrobial activity.

Article Synopsis
  • Anemia related to chronic kidney disease (CKD) often needs treatment with erythropoietin (EPO), and GSK1278863 is a new oral drug designed to boost the body's own EPO production while also enhancing red blood cell production through alternative mechanisms.
  • The study was a multicenter, single-blind, randomized trial involving anemic patients with different stages of CKD, where participants received either GSK1278863 or a placebo for 28 days to evaluate its effects.
  • The results showed that GSK1278863 led to significant increases in EPO levels and hemoglobin in participants, with many experiencing notable improvements, but some withdrew from the study due to high hemoglobin levels; limitations included

Incidentally Detected Testicular Metastasis in a Case of Prostatic Adenocarcinoma.

J Clin Diagn Res

December 2015

Senior Consultant, Department of Radiation Oncology, Pushpanjali Crosslay Hospital, Galaxy Cancer Institute, Vaishali, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India .

Adenocarcinoma of the prostate is one of the common cancers among elderly men worldwide. However, testicular metastasis detected incidentally after orchiectomy is a rare presentation as most commonly we encounter patients presenting with bone metastasis at the time of primary diagnosis. Here, we describe a recently diagnosed case of prostatic carcinoma that had metastasis in a single testis, incidentally detected in the orchiectomy histopathological specimen, performed for surgical castration and emphasize the importance of routine microscopical examination of the testicular specimens.

Open midfoot wedge osteotomy correction can cause neurovascular compromise, requires extensive exposure, sacrifices normal joints, and shortens the foot. We used a minimally invasive technique to treat complex foot deformities by combining percutaneous Gigli saw midfoot osteotomy, circular external fixation, and acute, gradual, or gradual with acute manipulation correction. The medical records of 23 patients (26 feet) with complex foot deformities (congenital, 18 feet; neuromuscular, 4 feet; post-traumatic, 3 feet; malunion, 1 foot) who had undergone treatment within an 18-year period (1990 through 2007) were retrospectively reviewed.

We investigated the survival of a pandemic strain of influenza A H1N1 on a variety of common household surfaces where multiple samples were taken from 4 types of common household fomite at 7 time points. Results showed that influenza A H1N1sw virus particles remained infectious for 48 hours on a wooden surface, for 24 hours on stainless steel and plastic surfaces, and for 8 hours on a cloth surface, although virus recovery from the cloth may have been suboptimal. Our results suggest that pandemic influenza A H1N1 can survive on common household fomites for extended periods of time, and that good hand hygiene and regular disinfection of commonly touched surfaces should be practiced during the influenza season to help reduce transmission.

March 2014

From the *Division of Gastroenterology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA; and †Department of Internal Medicine, Pushpanjali Crosslay Hospital, New Delhi, India.

Clinical trials evaluating the protective effect of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for the prevention of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis (PEP) have yielded inconclusive results. Our objective was to conduct a meta-analysis of the data to date to evaluate the efficacy and safety of rectal NSAIDs for PEP prophylaxis. We did a systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science databases and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials.
