Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 as a Prognostic Marker in Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Life (Basel)

November 2024

Family Medicine Clinic and Research Institute for Convergence of Biomedical Science and Technology, Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital, Yangsan 50612, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a severe kidney cancer with a poor prognosis, and the role of Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) in its progression is not well understood.
  • In this study, researchers compared NPC1L1 expression in normal versus RCC tissues and found that lower levels in RCC, especially in certain subtypes, were linked to worse patient survival.
  • The findings indicate that higher NPC1L1 levels could be a potential independent prognostic marker for bad outcomes in RCC, necessitating further research on its mechanisms in cancer progression.

Introduction: Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide, often resulting in low levels of physical activity post-discharge. A comprehensive exercise program could be a safe method to increase stroke patients' physical activity and exercise volume. This pilot study examines the effectiveness, safety, and feasibility of a comprehensive exercise regimen for stroke patients residing in the community after discharge.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study explored how the location of re-entry tears affects blood flow and pressure in uncomplicated type B aortic dissection using computer simulations based on CT images.
  • - The simulations showed that models with re-entry tears generally had lower blood pressure and wall shear stress compared to those without, especially when the tear was near the end of the false lumen.
  • - The findings could help inform fenestration surgery in these patients, but more research with a larger patient pool is needed to validate the results.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed the outcomes of singleton pregnancies from frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles using data from over 44,000 women in South Korea, focusing on different embryo transfer methods.
  • It found that artificial cycle-FET (AC-FET) had higher risks of complications like hypertensive disorders compared to natural cycle-FET (NC-FET), while stimulated cycle-FET (SC-FET) offered lower miscarriage rates but had some increased risks as well.
  • The overall results suggest that NC-FET is the safest approach for both mothers and babies, with SC-FET being a reasonable alternative when NC-FET isn't possible.

Empagliflozin Attenuates High-Glucose-Induced Astrocyte Activation and Inflammation via NF-κB Pathway.

Curr Issues Mol Biol

November 2024

Research Institute for Convergence of Biomedical Science and Technology, Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital, Yangsan 50621, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • SGLT2 inhibitors, like empagliflozin (EMPA), not only help manage blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes but may also reduce inflammation and protect against atherosclerosis by influencing M2 macrophage activity.
  • EMPA was studied for its effects on hypothalamic inflammation in mice on a high-fat diet, showing regulation of astrocyte markers and inflammatory cytokines linked to the NF-κB pathway.
  • The research suggests that EMPA has potential therapeutic benefits beyond glucose control, offering new strategies for tackling inflammation and neuroprotection in metabolic diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • The genus Streptococcus includes both harmless and harmful bacteria that naturally reside in the human body, particularly in the female genital tract (FGT), where there are two main groups: the pathogenic group B Streptococci (GBS) and the commensal viridans group streptococci (VGS).
  • A novel strain named Streptococcus sp. K0074 was isolated from a vaginal swab of an endometrial cancer patient and showed potential as a commensal member of the VGS, specifically within the mitis subgroup.
  • This strain produced a bacteriocin-like substance that can inhibit the growth and biofilm formation of the harmful bacterium MRSA, suggesting it may play a significant

December 2024

School of Computer Science and Engineering, Pusan National University, Busan 46241, South Korea; Center for Artificial Intelligence Research, Pusan National University, Busan 46241, South Korea. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Differences in iron accumulation patterns in atypical parkinsonian syndromes can be identified using susceptibility-weighted images, and deep learning methods are effective for this task.
  • Traditional deep learning models need large labeled datasets, which are expensive and can compromise patient privacy.
  • A new few-shot learning framework is proposed to distinguish between multiple system atrophy parkinsonian (MSA-P) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) using fewer data samples, achieving better performance through enhanced feature identification and a novel hyperbolic space technique.

Sarcopenia severity is related to arterial stiffness and hypertension in older Korean population without underweight and obesity: population based cross-sectional study.

Front Public Health

November 2024

Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Pusan National University School of Medicine, Biomedical Research Institute, Pusan National University Hospital, Busan, Republic of Korea.

Background: Aging and obesity are considered causes of arterial stiffness, which triggers hypertension in the older population. However, a substantial number of older adults without obesity have hypertension, suggesting that arterial stiffness and hypertension are related to different risk factors in older adults without obesity. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine whether sarcopenia is related to arterial stiffness or hypertension in older Korean adults without underweight and obesity.

November 2024

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital, Pusan National University School of Medicine, 20 Geumo-ro, Mulgeum-eup, Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, 626-770, Republic of Korea.

When a severe medial wall defect is present in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA), simple bone grafting (BG) may not be sufficient, and trabecular metal (TM) augmentation is often necessary. We aimed to evaluate whether there were differences in outcomes of revision THA with medial wall defects depending on the use of TM augmentation. Between 2009-2021, 130 patients were classified into two groups: 80 patients undergoing bone grafting (BG group) and 50 patients undergoing both bone grafting and TM augmentation (BG/TM group).

Irradiation of the head and neck inevitably leads to decreased salivary gland function. It is postulated that radiation generates excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduces salivary gland function by ferroptosis, a new cell death mechanism; however, research in this area is currently lacking. In this study, we investigated the effects of amifostine and melatonin on acute salivary gland dysfunction and ferroptosis.
