In order to develop a standardized nomenclature for the mechanisms and materials utilized during extracorporeal blood purification, a consensus expert conference was convened in November 2022. Standardized nomenclature serves as a common language for reporting research findings, new device development, and education. It is also critically important to support patient safety, allow comparisons between techniques, materials, and devices, and be essential for defining and naming innovative technologies and classifying devices for regulatory approval.

Purpose: Dual-velocity encoded (dual-venc or DV) 4D flow MRI achieves wide velocity dynamic range and velocity-to-noise ratio (VNR), enabling accurate neurovascular flow characterization. To reduce scan time, we present interleaved dual-venc 4D Flow with independently prescribed, prospectively undersampled spatial resolution of the high-venc (HV) acquisition: Variable Spatial Resolution Dual Venc (VSRDV).

Methods: A prototype VSRDV sequence was developed based on a Cartesian acquisition with eight-point phase encoding, combining PEAK-GRAPPA acceleration with zero-filling in phase and partition directions for HV.

Vertebral metastases of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are frequently diagnosed in the metastatic setting and are commonly identified in the thoracic vertebrae in patients. Treatment of NSCLC bone metastases, which are often multiple, is palliative, and the median survival times are 3 to 6 months. We have characterized spontaneous vertebral metastases in a brain metastases model of NSCLC and correlated these findings with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Haemodialysis membranes.

Nat Rev Nephrol

June 2018

Davidson School of Chemical Engineering, Purdue University College of Engineering, West Lafayette, IN, USA.

Haemodialysis is an extracorporeal process in which the blood is cleansed via removal of uraemic retention products by a semipermeable membrane. Traditionally, dialysis membranes have been broadly classified on the basis of their composition (cellulosic or noncellulosic) and water permeability (low flux or high flux). However, advances in materials technology and polymer chemistry have led to the development of membranes with specific characteristics and refined properties that mandate a reconsideration of traditional membrane classification systems.

Background: Insulin resistance is associated with the higher content of intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) and the saturation of intramyocellular lipid (IMCL), but a paucity of data exist in humans. This study examined associations among IMAT content, IMCL saturation, and fasting glucose concentration in middle-aged and older adults with overweight or obesity.

Methods: Seventy-five subjects (26 males, 49 females) were recruited and thigh muscle and IMAT were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging.

Nomenclature for renal replacement therapy in acute kidney injury: basic principles.

Crit Care

October 2016

Department of Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation, International Renal Research Institute of Vicenza, San Bortolo Hospital, Viale Rodolfi 37, Vicenza, 36100, Italy.

This article reports the conclusions of a consensus expert conference on the basic principles and nomenclature of renal replacement therapy (RRT) currently utilized to manage acute kidney injury (AKI). This multidisciplinary consensus conference discusses common definitions, components, techniques, and operations of the machines and platforms used to deliver extracorporeal therapies, utilizing a "machine-centric" rather than a "patient-centric" approach. We provide a detailed description of the performance characteristics of membranes, filters, transmembrane transport of solutes and fluid, flows, and methods of measurement of delivered treatment, focusing on continuous renal replacement therapies (CRRT) which are utilized in the management of critically ill patients with AKI.
