This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of machine learning (ML) techniques in classifying pediatric individuals-cardiological patients, healthy participants, and athletes-based on cardiorespiratory features from short-term static measurements. It also examined the impact of cardiorespiratory coupling (CRC)-related features (from causal and information domains) on the modeling accuracy to identify a preferred cardiorespiratory feature set that could be further explored for specialized tasks, such as monitoring training progress or diagnosing health conditions. We utilized six self-prepared datasets that comprised various subsets of cardiorespiratory parameters and applied several ML algorithms to classify subjects into three distinct groups.

There is a lack of studies on non-linear heart rate (HR) variability in athletes. We aimed to assess the usefulness of short-term HR dynamics and asymmetry parameters to evaluate the neural modulation of cardiac activity based on non-stationary RR interval series by studying their changes during sympathetic nervous system activity stimulation (isometric handgrip test) and post-stimulation recovery in professional ski mountaineers. The correlation between the changes in the parameters and the respiratory rate (RespRate) and also the duration of the career was analyzed.

In this paper, we propose a solution to resolve the limitation of deep CNN models in real-time applications. The proposed approach uses multi-threshold binarization over the whole multi-spectral remote sensing image to extract the vector of discriminative features for classification. We compare the classification accuracy and the training time of the proposed approach with ResNet and Ensemble CNN models.

Introduction: The primary approach for managing skin cancer involves surgery, although radical radiotherapy (RT) may be considered as an alternative option in cases where patients decline the treatment themselves or are not eligible for surgical intervention. Herein we assess single-institution material in terms of the use of hypofractionated QUAD SHOT RT in patients disqualified from surgery.

Material And Methods: Between December 2019 and December 2022, nine patients with locally advanced non-melanoma skin cancer were disqualified from surgery and as a result were treated at the Radom Oncology Centre, Poland.

Objective: The wine industry generates large quantities of by-products presenting a remarkably valuable composition in phytochemicals. The process that can significantly increase the content of bioactive compounds is fermentation by yeast and other microorganisms. The current study presents, for the first time, an evaluation of the potential of grape stems extract and its ferments using the Scoby consortium, as a cosmetic raw material for improving the skin care properties of facial cosmetics.

The paper presents the application of a strain gauge sensor and a viscous brake filled with an electrorheological (ER) fluid, which is a smart material with controlled rheological properties, by an electric field to the fluid domain. For experimental tests, a cylindrical viscous brake was designed. The tests were carried out on a test stand especially prepared for this purpose and suitable for the examination of the impact of the rotational speed of the input shaft and the value of the electric voltage supplied to the viscous brake on pressing forces, taking into account the ER fluid temperature and brake fluid filling level.

Article Synopsis
  • - The article investigates how material degradation affects the deformation of paragliders in flight, using both experimental tests and numerical modeling to analyze the pressure distribution over the wing and its performance.
  • - Three types of Polyamide 6.6 fabrics were tested for effects of thermal, UV, and flexing degradation, revealing that flexing damage significantly impacts air permeability, while UV aging affects mechanical properties more severely.
  • - The research provides a methodology for predicting paraglider material behavior, potentially enhancing safety and efficiency in design and prototyping, and suggests future studies could explore complex damage models during emergencies like collapses.

This paper is devoted to the determination of the coefficient of friction (COF) in the drawbead region in metal forming processes. As the test material, AW-5251 aluminium alloys sheets fabricated under various hardening conditions (AW-5251-O, AW-5251-H14, AW-5251-H16 and AW-5251H22) were used. The sheets were tested using a drawbead simulator with different countersample roughness and different orientations of the specimens in relation to the sheet rolling direction.

In fertility-sparing management (FSM), two different issues can be distinguished: the risk of recurrence/death and the chance of childbearing. Survival is the principal outcome in oncology, and definitions of overall survival and progression-free survival are therefore well defined and widely accepted. The introduction of FSM to clinical practice was determined by the desire of young cancer patients to still have children.

Venom immunotherapy (VIT) represents a potential therapeutic approach for the management of venom allergies, aiming to modify the immune response to venom allergens and enhance its precision. Previous studies have demonstrated that VIT induces a shift in T helper cell responses from Th2 to Th1, characterized by the production of IL-2 and interferon-gamma by CD4 and CD8 cells. In order to explore long-term pathways following VIT treatment and verify potential new outcomes, the serum concentrations of 30 cytokines were assessed in a cohort of 61 patients (18 control, 43 study group) exhibiting hypersensitivity to wasp venom.

Maternal embryonic leucine-zipper kinase (MELK) plays a significant role in cell cycle progression, mitosis, cell migration, cell renewal, gene expression, embryogenesis, proliferation, apoptosis, and spliceosome assembly. In addition, MELK is known to be overexpressed in multiple types of cancer and is associated with cancer proliferation. Tumorigenesis shares many similarities with wound healing, in which the rate of cell proliferation is a critical factor.

Mechanism of Chromium Separation and Concentration from Tannery Wastewater by Membrane Methods.

Membranes (Basel)

February 2023

Bioeconomy and Ecoinnovation Centre, Proecological Technologies Research Group, Łukasiewicz Research Network, Institute for Sustainable Technologies, Pulaskiego 6/10, 26-600 Radom, Poland.

The article specifies conditions for a nanofiltration process employing a diafiltration method with a constant volume diafiltration (NF-CVD) for exhausted chromium tannery wastewater treatment and describes a mechanism of the examined process carried out for model wastewater. The authors prove that a decrease in salt concentration in the NF-CVD process is an important factor that enables effective concentration of chromium. Based on the proposed chromium separation and concentration mechanisms, it was found that this effect may be achieved by (1) limiting the formation of an ionic adsorption-polarization layer and (2) reducing the increase in the osmotic pressure caused by a change in the separation properties of the membrane.

Immortalized cell lines are widely used in vitro tools in oncology and hematology research. While these cell lines represent artificial systems and may accumulate genetic aberrations with each passage, they are still considered valuable models for pilot, preliminary, and screening studies. Despite their limitations, cell lines are cost-effective and provide repeatable and comparable results.
