Int J Emerg Med

December 2024

Trauma Research Program, School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, P.O. Box 365067, San Juan, 00967, Puerto Rico.

Background: Elevated initial serum lactate (iSL) levels are frequently employed to assess trauma severity, but their predictive value for mortality and morbidity remains inconsistent. We evaluated the association of iSL with mortality and morbidity at Puerto Rico Trauma Hospital (PRTH).

Methods: This IRB-approved retrospective study included trauma patients ≥ 18 years with iSL measured within the first 48 h of admission to PRTH (July 2014-June 2019).

Functional analysis of the Mtl1 protein in Saccharomyces cerevisiae has revealed that this transmembrane sensor endows yeast cells with resistance to oxidative stress through a signaling mechanism called the cell wall integrity pathway (CWI). We observed upregulation of multiple heat shock proteins (HSPs), proteins associated with the formation of stress granules, and the phosphatase subunit of trehalose 6-phosphate synthase which suggests that mtl1Δ strains undergo intrinsic activation of a non-lethal heat stress response. Furthermore, quantitative global proteomic analysis conducted on TMT-labeled proteins combined with metabolome analysis revealed that mtl1Δ strains exhibit decreased levels of metabolites of carboxylic acid metabolism, decreased expression of anabolic enzymes and increased expression of catabolic enzymes involved in the metabolism of amino acids, with enhanced expression of mitochondrial respirasome proteins.

Objectives: Management of colorectal cancer warrants mutational analysis of KRAS/NRAS when considering anti-epidermal growth factor receptor therapy and BRAF testing for prognostic stratification. In this multicenter study, we compared a fully integrated, cartridge-based system to standard-of-care assays used by participating laboratories.

Methods: Twenty laboratories enrolled 874 colorectal cancer cases between November 2017 and December 2018.

Traumatic Vascular Injury and its Management with Temporary Intravascular Shunts: A Puerto Rico Trauma Hospital's Experience.

P R Health Sci J

December 2018

Department of Surgery, School of Medicine, University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, San Juan, PR; Puerto Rico Trauma Hospital, Puerto Rico Medical Center, San Juan, PR.

Objective: Temporary intravascular shunts (TIVSs) are commonly used as a damagecontrol procedure in trauma settings. Currently, there is scarce literature in the civilian field, and what there is is limited to large trauma centers with multiple resources. Therefore, we aimed to describe TIVS usage, and the outcomes of that usage, at Puerto Rico Trauma Hospital.

Temporal bone trauma and the role of multidetector CT in the emergency department.

Radiographics

October 2011

Department of Radiological Sciences, Diagnostic Radiology Section, University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, Puerto Rico Medical Center, Ave Américo Miranda, PO Box 5067, San Juan, PR 00936.

The temporal bone anatomy is complex, with many critical structures in close association with one another. The temporal bone region comprises cranial nerves V, VI, VII, and VIII; vascular structures such as the internal carotid and middle meningeal arteries; sigmoid sinus; jugular bulb; and sensorineural and membranous structures of the inner ear. Most temporal bone fractures are a result of high-energy blunt head trauma.

Multidetector CT evaluation of calcaneal fractures.

Radiographics

May 2011

Department of Radiological Sciences, Diagnostic Radiology Section, University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, Puerto Rico Medical Center, Ave Américo Miranda, PO Box 5067, San Juan, PR.

As the largest tarsal bone and the most inferior bone in the body, the calcaneus is responsible for supporting the axial load from the weight of the body. It is most commonly fractured after a fall from a height in which axial loads exceed its support capacity. Calcaneal fractures account for 60% of all tarsal fractures.
