A deep sift convolutional neural networks for total brain volume estimation from 3D ultrasound images.

Preterm infants are a highly vulnerable population. The total brain volume (TBV) of these infants can be accurately estimated by brain ultrasound (US) imaging which enables a longitudinal study of early brain growth during Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) admission. Automatic estimation of TBV from 3D images increases the diagnosis speed and evades the necessity for an expert to manually segment 3D images, which is a sophisticated and time consuming task.

Relationship of early brain growth pattern measured by ultrasound with neurological outcome at two years of age in very low birth weight infants.

The purpose of this study is to define the impact of early brain growth trajectory in very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) on neurological prognosis at 2 years, assessed using sequential ultrasound (US) scans. This is a prospective cohort study with consecutive inclusion of VLBWI ≤ 32 weeks gestational age and ≤ 1500 g at birth. Total brain volume (TBV) was assessed using sequential 3D-US from birth to discharge.

ANCA detection with solid phase chemiluminescence assay: diagnostic and severity association in vasculitis.

ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) comprises a group of necrotizing vasculitis that mainly affects small- and medium-sized vessels. Serum anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA), mainly anti-myeloperoxidase (anti-MPO) and anti-proteinase 3 (anti-PR3), levels may correlate to severity, prognosis, and recurrence of the disease. A retrospective analysis of 101 patients with MPO-positive and 54 PR3-positive vasculitis was performed, using laboratory established cut-off value, measured by chemiluminescence.

A total of 2129 participants were included in this study.

Acute effect of physical activity on academic outcomes in school-aged youth: A systematic review and multivariate meta-analysis.

Background: There has been an increase in the number of studies examining the effect of acute and chronic physical activity on academic outcomes in children and adolescents in the last two decades. We aimed to systematically determine the acute effects of physical activity on academic outcomes in school-aged youth and to examine possible moderators.

Methods: We conducted a systematic search using PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and PsycINFO databases (from inception to 11th January 2023) for studies assessing the acute effects of physical activity on academic performance-related outcomes in school-aged youth.

Association of Prolactin, Oxytocin, and Homocysteine With the Clinical and Cognitive Features of a First Episode of Psychosis Over a 1-Year Follow-Up.

Background: The clinical debut of schizophrenia is frequently a first episode of psychosis (FEP). As such, there is considerable interest in identifying associations between biological markers and clinical or cognitive characteristics that help predict the progression and outcome of FEP patients. Previous studies showed that high prolactin, low oxytocin, and high homocysteine are factors associated with FEP 6 months after diagnosis, at which point plasma levels were correlated with some clinical and cognitive characteristics.

Analysis of cognitive framework and biomedical translation of tissue engineering in otolaryngology.

Tissue engineering is a relatively recent research area aimed at developing artificial tissues that can restore, maintain, or even improve the anatomical and/or functional integrity of injured tissues. Otolaryngology, as a leading surgical specialty in head and neck surgery, is a candidate for the use of these advanced therapies and medicinal products developed. Nevertheless, a knowledge-based analysis of both areas together is still needed.

Environmental tobacco smoke exposure and 24-h movement guidelines in Spanish young people.

Background: No prior research has investigated how exposure to environmental tobacco smoke is related to the combination of 24-h movement behaviors among young populations thus far. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between exposure to secondhand smoke and the 24-h movement guidelines.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using data from the last available wave of the Spanish National Health Survey [2017], a nationally representative survey of the Spanish children and adult population.

Significance of Umbilical Cord Leptin Profile during Pregnancy in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: The literature provides limited evidence of cord blood leptin levels in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), with contradictory and inconsistent results with respect to their possible implications for maternal, perinatal, and future complications.

Methods: MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched in order to investigate the state of evidence on the association of leptin profile in cord blood during perinatal complications in GDM. We critically assessed the risk of bias using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale.

Intestinal Obstruction for Anisakiasis: Surgical and Physical Therapy Treatment.

Anisakiasis, a zoonotic disease that can lead to small intestine obstruction, has seen a significant rise in Spain. The country has become the first in Europe with an annual incidence of 8000 cases, primarily due to the popularity of consuming exotic dishes of undercooked or raw fish and the impact of climate change. The clinical presentation of anisakiasis can mimic symptoms of acute appendicitis or intestinal obstruction, leading to potential misdiagnosis.

Trends in adherence to the muscle-strengthening activity guidelines in the US over a 20-year span.

Purpose: Purpose to evaluate the prevalence and temporal trends in adherence to muscle-strengthening activity (MSA) guidelines among the US population from 1997 to 2018 (pre-Covid 19).

Methods: We used nationally representative data from the National Health Interview Survey of the US (NHIS; a cross-sectional household interview survey). We pooled data from 22 consecutive cycles (1997 to 2018) and estimated prevalence and trends of adherence to MSA guidelines among adults aged 18-24 years, 25-34 years, 35-44 years, 45-64 years, and ≥ 65 years.

A Case-Control Study of Cognitive Function in Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease Before and After Hemodialysis in Southern Spain.

BACKGROUND Cognitive problems are frequent in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) treated with hemodialysis. However, previous studies used only a single cognitive screening test or a small number of cognitive indices, which is inadequate for an exhaustive evaluation of cognitive deficits. This case-control study aimed to evaluate cognitive function in patients with ESRD before and after hemodialysis at centers in southern Spain, and included analysis of associations between cognitive function and duration of hemodialysis, biochemistry, body composition, and treatment variables.

Correlation Between Opioid Drug Prescription and Opioid-Related Mortality in Spain as a Surveillance Tool: Ecological Study.

Background: Opioid drug prescription (ODP) and opioid-related mortality (ORM) have increased in Spain. However, their relationship is complex, as ORM is registered without considering the type of opioid (legal or illegal).

Objective: This ecological study aimed to examine the correlation between ODP and ORM in Spain and discuss their usefulness as a surveillance tool.

Differentiating the influence of sedentary behavior and physical activity on brain health in late adulthood.

Public health messaging calls for individuals to be more physically active and less sedentary, yet these lifestyle behaviors have been historically studied independently. Both physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) are linked through time-use in a 24-hour day and are related to health outcomes, such as neurocognition. While the benefits of PA on brain health in late adulthood have been well-documented, the influence of SB remains to be understood.

Ultrasonographic Estimation of Ventricular Volume in Infants Born Preterm with Posthemorrhagic Ventricular Dilatation: A Nested Substudy of the Randomized Controlled Early Versus Late Ventricular Intervention Study (ELVIS) Trial.

Objective: To study the potential role of ventricular volume (VV) estimation in the management of posthemorrhagic ventricular dilatation related to the need for ventriculoperitoneal (VP)-shunt insertion and 2-year neurodevelopmental outcome in infants born preterm.

Study Design: We included 59 patients from the Early vs Late Ventricular Intervention Study from 4 participating centers. VV was manually segmented in 209 3-dimensional ultrasound scans and estimated from 2-dimensional ultrasound linear measurements in a total of 1226 ultrasounds.

Psychological wellbeing in adult adoptees: current age and developmental tasks.

Introduction: Studies about adult adoptees are normally focused on the differences in adjustment difficulties between them and non-adoptees. However, there has been less research about adoptees' positive and developmental adjustment in adulthood. The aim of this study is to test a model of the mediating role of adoptees' achievement of adulthood tasks in the relationship between current age and psychological wellbeing.

Needs of patients with multi-morbidity and heart failure for the development of a mHealth to improve their self-management: A qualitative analysis.

Objective: To provide practical information regarding needs, preferences of content and format of an app to assist the self-management in patients with multi-morbidity and heart failure (HF).

Methods: The three-phase study was conducted in Spain. Six integrative reviews, a qualitative methodology based on Van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenology through semi-structured interviews and user stories were used.
