Importance: The association between low socioeconomic position (SEP) and poor survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) has not been thoroughly investigated.

Objectives: To evaluate the association between individual SEP and survival after OHCA and to identify any mediating pathways using structural equation modeling (SEM).

Design, Setting, And Participants: This is a retrospective cohort study that used data collected from January 2013 to December 2019.

Impact of Awareness Time Interval on the Effect of Bystander Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation on Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: A Nationwide Study.

Purpose: The awareness time interval (ATI), the time from the witnessed event to emergency medical service (EMS) activation, is an important factor influencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) outcomes. Since bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BCPR) is provided after cardiac arrest is recognized, the effect of BCPR may vary depending on ATI delay. We aimed to investigate whether ATI modifies the effect of BCPR on OHCA outcomes.

Changes in the Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Disaggregated Analysis by Region and Hospital Type in Korea.

Objectives: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a global shortage of medical resources; therefore, we investigated whether COVID-19 impacted the quality of non-COVID-19 hospital care in Korea by comparing hospital standardized mortality rates (HSMRs) before and during the pandemic.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed Korean National Health Insurance discharge claim data obtained from January to June in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. Patients' in-hospital deaths were classified according to the most responsible diagnosis categories.

This paper presents the role, tasks, and place of a hospital pharmacy in the structure of the entire facility. The role of hospital drug management and pharmacy seems to be extremely important in providing patients with high-quality care. Particular emphasis was placed on the distribution systems of medicinal products and medical devices in the hospital.

The Comparative Method Based on Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography for Assessing the Hemodynamic Significance of Coronary Artery Stenosis.

Purpose: An important aspect in the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease is the functional evaluation of narrowed blood vessels. Medical image-based Computational Fluid Dynamic methods are currently increasingly being used in the clinical setting for flow studies of cardio vascular system. The aim of our study was to confirm the feasibility and functionality of a non-invasive computational method providing information about hemodynamic significance of coronary stenosis.

DNA methylation is associated with prenatal exposure to sulfur dioxide and childhood attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms.

Epigenetic influence plays a role in the association between exposure to air pollution and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); however, research regarding sulfur dioxide (SO) is scarce. Herein, we investigate the associations between prenatal SO exposure and ADHD rating scale (ARS) at ages 4, 6 and 8 years repeatedly in a mother-child cohort (n = 329). Whole blood samples were obtained at ages 2 and 6 years, and genome-wide DNA methylation (DNAm) was analyzed for 51 children using the Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation BeadChip.

Incidence, Severity, and Mortality of Influenza During 2010-2020 in Korea: A Nationwide Study Based on the Population-Based National Health Insurance Service Database.

Background: The epidemiology of influenza is commonly used to understand and establish relevant health policies for emerging respiratory infections, including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, Korea has no confirmed nationwide data on influenza incidence, severity, and mortality rate.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study to obtain epidemic data on influenza at the national level using National Health Insurance claims data during 2010 to 2020.

Challenges in Care for Non-COVID-19 Patients with Severe Chronic Illnesses during COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Study of Healthcare Providers Working around Acute Care Hospitals in South Korea.

Background: The COVID-19 epidemic has afflicted patients with severe chronic illnesses who need continuous care between home and hospitals. This qualitative study examines the experiences and challenges of healthcare providers around acute care hospitals who have cared for patients with severe chronic illness in non-COVID-19 situations during the pandemic.

Methods: Eight healthcare providers, who work in various healthcare settings around acute care hospitals and frequently care for non-COVID-19 patients with severe chronic illnesses, were recruited using purposive sampling from September to October 2021 in South Korea.

The effect of regional distribution of isolation rooms in emergency departments on ambulance travel time during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective: The number and distribution of isolation rooms in Korea differ by region. The distribution of isolation beds in emergency departments may have affected ambulance travel time and burden on emergency medical service (EMS) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: This retrospective observational study analyzed EMS records in four regions of the Gyeonggi Province, Korea, from January 01, 2019 to December 31, 2020.

The impact of the Mental Health Act revision for deinstitutionalization in Korea on the crime rate of people with schizophrenia.

This study examined changes in the crime rates of people with schizophrenia in Korea in comparison with the general population after the Mental Health Act revision for deinstitutionalization in 2017. The crime rates of people with schizophrenia and the general population were calculated from 2012 to 2021 using the Korean National Police Agency crime statistics. The effects of the law revision in 2017 on the crime rates were assessed using the interrupted time series and difference-in-difference analyses.

Association of hemoglobin variability with the risk of cardiovascular disease: a nationally representative retrospective cohort study from South Korea.

Hemoglobin variability is known to increase cardiovascular mortality in chronic kidney disease, but the association of hemoglobin variability with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population is yet unclear. This retrospective cohort study based on 'the South Korean National Health Insurance Service database' consisted of 198,347 adults who went through all three health examinations. Hemoglobin variability is defined as the average successive variability of three separate hemoglobin values from each health screening period.

Epidemiology of patients who died in the emergency departments and need of end-of-life care in Korea from 2016 to 2019.

The need of palliative care at the end-of-life in the emergency departments (ED) is growing. The study aims to investigate the epidemiology of patients who died during care in ED using nationwide database, and to estimate the need for palliative care in the ED. A retrospective observational study was conducted using the National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS) database.

Prospective association between phthalate exposure in childhood and liver function in adolescence: the Ewha Birth and Growth Cohort Study.

Background: Phthalate exposure is ubiquitous due to the widespread use of plastic products in daily life, and affects several health outcomes, including metabolic diseases. In this study, we evaluated the effects of phthalate exposure in childhood on liver function in adolescence.  METHODS: Among 164 Ewha Birth and Growth Cohort Study participants followed up during two exposure periods (when the children were aged 3-5 and 7-9 years), 126 were followed up at age 10-15 years.

The association between occupational stress level and health-related productivity loss among Korean employees.

Objectives: Occupational stress management is particularly important for successful business operations, since occupational stress adversely affects workers' health, eventually lowering their productivity. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the correlation between occupational stress and health-related productivity loss (HRPL) among Korean workers.

Methods: In 2021, 1,078 workers participated in a web-based questionnaire survey.

Dynamic-passive correction of hallux valgus and associated static foot deformities.

Purpose: The aim of this paper was the application of a new dynamic-passive method of treatment in correction of hallux valgus and coexisting static deformities of the foot (transverse-plane and plano-valgus foot).

Methods: The study involved 50 patients; 26 with full big toe correction after the passive correction grip (group I) and 24 with big toe correction requiring additional passive abduction (group II). The patients regularly performed exercises using the designed device according to the planned schedule.

The Impact of Common Acne on the Well-Being of Young People Aged 15-35 Years and the Influence of Nutrition Knowledge and Diet on Acne Development.

Acne is a disorder of sebaceous glands, and it most commonly develops on the face. The role of the diet in triggering and treating acne is controversial and has been widely debated in the literature. A knowledge of the environmental factors that contribute to acne could improve the patient’s physical and emotional well-being, increase the efficacy of treatment, and minimize the risk of anxiety and depressive disorders.

The Course of COVID-19 in Patients with Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases.

Patients with systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease (SARD) have increased susceptibility to viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2. The aim of this study was to analyse the SARD patient population with COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) in terms of baseline characteristics, severity, course and outcomes of the disease compared with the non-SARD group, and to identify factors associated with prognosis, including remdesivir therapy efficacy. Retrospective study comprised 8220 COVID-19 cases from the SARSTer database, including 185 with SARD.

Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation location, coronary angiography and survival in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Introduction: The best location for safe and timely implementation of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) is currently uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the association between the location of ECPR and survival outcomes in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. We also evaluated whether the effects of ECPR location on survival differed between patients who underwent coronary angiography (CAG) and those who did not.

Immunogenicity of the hepatitis B vaccine adjuvanted with AS04C in patients with biological therapies.

Background: Hepatitis B vaccination is necessary for patients with biologic therapies because of the immunomodulatory effect of these drugs. Due to the elevated use of these therapies in the latest years, the research for new vaccination regimens and the improvement of the current ones is essential. New adjuvants like AS04C might be a potential strategy to improve immune response.

Safety and efficacy of two ilioiliac tension band plates osteosynthesis of fragility fractures of the pelvis.

The study retrospectively determined the efficacy and safety of fixation of the pelvis (FFP) fragility fractures type IV using two tension band ilioiliac locking compression plates. Forty-one patients with FFP were treated in 2017-2020. 16 patients with FFP type IV, unable to walk weight-bearing, were treated by fixation using two tension band ilioiliac locking compression plates without fixing the anterior ring.

Parental Knowledge about Allergies and Problems with an Elimination Diet in Children Aged 3 to 6 Years.

Allergic diseases are highly prevalent, and they can exert a significant influence on the patients’ physical and mental well-being, thus affecting the quality of their lives and society as a whole. The aim of this study was to evaluate parental knowledge about allergens, allergy symptoms, and treatment of allergies, and to identify problems with adherence to an elimination diet and the underlying difficulties. Twelve kindergartens and the parents of 1350 preschoolers took part in the first stage of the study.
