The abnormal production of short chain fatty acid (SCFAs) caused by gut microbial dysbiosis plays an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). This study sought to evaluate how butyrate, one of SCFAs, affect the pathology in a subacute 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine hydrochloride (MPTP) treated mouse model of PD. Sodium butyrate (NaB; 165 mg/kg/day i.

Drinking water disinfection may result in the formation of different classes of toxic disinfection by-products (DBPs). Haloacetamides (HAcAms) are an emerging class of nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs), which are generally more prevalent at lower concentrations in disinfected water than carbonaceous DBPs. Herein a fast, convenient, and effective method of analyzing 10 HAcAms in drinking water samples was demonstrated.

A method is described for modulating the anodic photoelectrochemistry of netlike CdS quantum dots through the deposition and dissolution of the electron acceptor manganese dioxide (MnO) on the surface of the photoelectrode. Specifically, the photocurrent of a CdS-modified indium tin oxide (ITO/CdS) electrode is inhibited by chemical deposition of MnO. However, the photocurrent becomes recovered by oxidative removal of MnO with HO.

Objective: To evaluate the actual effect of the schistosomiasis control program in Jiangsu Province from 2010 to 2015.
Methods: A total of 67 schistosomiasis-endemic counties in 10 cities were selected, and a combination of retrospective investigation and on-site investigation was adopted to collect and record the epidemic data of the counties from 2010 to 2015, and a retrospective survey database of epidemic situation was established. The effects of integrated control strategies with both snail control and infection source control were evaluated.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is strongly associated with life style, especially dietary habits, which have gained attention as disease modifiers. Here, we report a fasting mimicking diet (FMD), fasting 3 days followed by 4 days of refeeding for three 1-week cycles, which accelerated the retention of motor function and attenuated the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrathydropyridine (MPTP)-induced PD mice. Levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), known to promote the survival of dopaminergic neurons, were increased in PD mice after FMD, suggesting an involvement of BDNF in FMD-mediated neuroprotection.

A novel and general strategy of split-type immunoassay is developed based on redox chemical reaction modulated photoelectrochemistry of carbon dots (CDs). Specifically, the photocurrent of the CDs sensitized titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO NPs) modified fluorine doped indium tin oxide (FTO) (that is the FTO/TiO/CDs) electrode was inhibited obviously by KMnO due to the oxidation of surface hydroxyl groups of CDs to electron accepting carbonyls. While the inhibited photocurrent of the KMnO treated FTO/TiO/CDs electrode can be restored by ascorbic acid (AA) because of the regeneration of electron donating hydroxyls to promote electron-hole separation.

Herein, we report a ratiometric fluorescence assay based on graphene quantum dots (GQDs) for the ultrasensitive DNA detection by coupling the nicking endonuclease assisted target recycling and the G-quadruplex/hemin DNAzyme biocatalysis for cascade signal amplifications. With o-phenylenediamine acted as the substrate of G-quadruplex/hemin DNAzyme, whose oxidization product (that is, 2,3-diaminophenazine, DAP) quenched the fluorescence intensity of GQDs (at 460nm) obviously, accompanied with the emergence of a new emission of DAP (at 564nm). The ratiometric signal variations at the emission wavelengths of 564 and 460nm (I564/I460) were utilized for label-free, sensitive, and selective detection of target DNA.
