Background: Major depression (MD) results from a complex synergy between genetic and environmental factors. The aim of this study is to analyze the interaction of tryptophan hydroxylase 2 gene (TPH2) variation and negative life events in the pathogenesis of MD. Three TPH2 polymorphisms, -703G/T (rs4570625), -473T/A (rs11178997), and 1463G/A (rs120074175), were selected based on previous findings of associations with MD.

Background: Chromosomal instability is a hallmark of cancer. Chromosomal imbalances, like amplifications and deletions, influence the transcriptional activity of genes. These imbalances affect not only the expression of genes in the aberrant chromosomal regions, but also that of related genes, and may be relevant to the cancer status.

Objectives: Previous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest that depression can be effectively treated by omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis to systematically evaluate the clinical applicability of the combination of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which are the two major bioactive types of PUFAs, in depressed women.

Methods: RCTs that compared the combination of DHA and EPA to placebo for short-course treatment of depression in women were systematically reviewed up to March 2015.

Objective: Despite ongoing debate about gender differences in pre-attention processes, little is known about gender effects on change detection for auditory and visual stimuli. We explored gender differences in change detection while processing duration information in auditory and visual modalities.

Method: We investigated pre-attentive processing of duration information using a deviant-standard reverse oddball paradigm (50 ms/150 ms) for auditory and visual mismatch negativity (aMMN and vMMN) in males and females (n=21/group).

Gender differences in rates of major depressive disorder (MDD) are well established, but gender differences in cognitive function have been little studied. Auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) was used to investigate gender differences in pre-attentive information processing in first episode MDD. In the deviant-standard reverse oddball paradigm, duration auditory MMN was obtained in 30 patients (15 males) and 30 age-/education-matched controls.

Configural processing advantage for Mongoloid than Caucasian faces during the structure coding stage.

J Integr Neurosci

December 2014

Department of Medical Psychology, Public Health Institute of Harbin Medical University, Heilongjiang Province, P. R. China , Department of Psychology, School of Education of Heilongjiang University, Heilongjiang Province, P. R. China.

Configural processing is considered to be the hallmark of face expertise, which has been widely investigated by face global inversion (inversion effect) and local inversion (Thatcher effect). Using a passive detection task in which face stimuli are task-irrelevant, both the face inversion effect and the Thatcher effect on race perception of faces were investigated. We found that although the N170 inversion effect (enhanced and delayed N 170 for inverted than upright condition) was similar across races of faces, Chinese participants showed a larger N 170 Thatcher effect (enhanced N 170 to Thatcherized faces than normal faces) for Mongoloid faces.

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) show deficits in cognitive functions. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the pre-attentive information processing in MDD patients are poorly understood. The present study investigated whether MDD patients have impairments in pre-attentive information processing indexed by auditory mismatch negativity (MMN).

View Article and Find Full Text PDF

We compared the pre-attentive processing in patients with a major depressive disorder (MDD) and matched healthy controls as indexed by the visual mismatch negativity (vMMN) elicited by exposure duration of visual stimuli randomly presented on both peripheral visual fields. To obtain the memory-comparison-based visual MMN, the role of standard and deviant stimuli was reversed in separate blocks. Compared with healthy participants, MDD patients exhibited decreased MMN amplitudes of long duration deviant only and this deficit was not correlated with the depression severity.
