Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, the First Affiliated Hospital of Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, Nanchang, Jiangxi, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • C. psittaci pneumonia often presents atypical symptoms, leading to underdiagnosis, so this study aimed to analyze clinical characteristics and develop a prediction model for patient outcomes.
  • A multicenter study across ten Chinese hospitals included data from 119 patients to identify risk factors for serious outcomes like death and ICU admission, using statistical analyses to create predictive models.
  • The final predictive model demonstrated strong discriminatory power and clinical utility, highlighting key factors like serum albumin and CURB-65, which could help clinicians manage C. psittaci pneumonia more effectively.

Department of Pulmonary Medicine, National Clinical Research Center for Infectious Disease, Shenzhen Third People's Hospital/The Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Background: Chest radiography (chest X-ray or CXR) plays an important role in the early detection of active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). In areas with a high TB burden that require urgent screening, there is often a shortage of radiologists available to interpret the X-ray results. Computer-aided detection (CAD) software employed with artificial intelligence (AI) systems may have the potential to solve this problem.

SARS-CoV-2 infection-induced hyper-inflammation links to the acute lung injury and COVID-19 severity. Identifying the primary mediators that initiate the uncontrolled hypercytokinemia is essential for treatments. Mast cells (MCs) are strategically located at the mucosa and beneficially or detrimentally regulate immune inflammations.

Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are credited with antitumor activity by preclinical studies and clinical trials. Efficient expansion of iNKT cells ex vivo is essential for their translational usage. The culturing procedure described here provides an optimized method for ex vivo expansion of iNKT cells using recombinant human IL-15 (rhIL-15) and recombinant human IL-12 (rhIL-12), which results in cell products with enhanced cytokine secretion and cytotoxicity while maintaining the purity and viability of iNKT cells.

Mechanistic Insight into Antiretroviral Potency of 2'-Deoxy-2'-β-fluoro-4'-azidocytidine (FNC) with a Long-Lasting Effect on HIV-1 Prevention.

J Med Chem

August 2020

Henan Key Laboratory of Organic Functional Molecule and Drug Innovation, College of Life Science, Henan Normal University, Xinxiang 453007, China.

In preclinical and phase I and II clinical studies, 2'-deoxy-2'-β-fluoro-4'-azidocytidine (FNC) displays a potent and long-lasting inhibition of HIV-1 infection. To investigate its mechanism of action, we compared it with the well-documented lamivudine (3TC). Pharmacokinetic studies revealed that the intracellular retention of FNC triphosphate in peripheral blood mononuclear cells was markedly longer than that of the 3TC triphosphate.

Global outbreaks of norovirus (NOV) gastroenteritis are associated with the most prevalent genotype, GII.4. Mutations in the protruding domain 2 (P2 domain) of the norovirus major capsid protein (VP1) result in the emergence of various NOV variants, however, it is unclear whether the minor capsid protein (VP2) also affects the generation of VP1 variants.

Switching Lamivudine with Adefovir Dipivoxil Combination Therapy to Entecavir Monotherapy Provides Better Viral Suppression and Kidney Safety.

Int J Med Sci

April 2019

Collaborative Innovation Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, Department of Infectious Diseases, The First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University. Hangzhou 310003, China.

Most chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients in China are primitively treated with a combination of lamivudine (LAM) and adefovir dipivoxil (ADV). Although antiviral resistance can be avoided with this combination therapy, using it can have harmful side effects related to ADV, specifically kidney and bone injury. This study was designed to compare viral suppression and kidney safety when switching LAM and ADV combination therapy to entecavir (ETV) monotherapy in patients with CHB and compensated hepatic cirrhosis.

MiR-494-3p promotes PI3K/AKT pathway hyperactivation and human hepatocellular carcinoma progression by targeting PTEN.

Sci Rep

July 2018

Department of Gastroenterology, Shidong Hospital, Yangpu District, Shanghai, Anhui Medical University, 999 Shiguang Road, Shanghai, 200438, China.

Recent studies have shown that miR-494-3p is oncogene and has a central role in many solid tumors; however, the role of miR-494-3p in the progression and prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unknown. In this study, it was found that miR-494-3p was up-regulated in HCC tissues. The high level of miR-494-3p in HCC tumors was correlated with aggressive clinicopathological characteristics and predicted poor prognosis in HCC patients.
