Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to evaluate the histopathologic findings of the Levator palpebralis superioris (LPS) muscle after biopsy and resection in patients with congenital ptosis, focusing on their relation to surgical outcomes.
  • A retrospective analysis involved 67 patients who underwent LPS resection, showing a significant improvement in margin-reflex distance (MRD-1) post-surgery, with an overall success rate of 80.3%.
  • The findings suggest that histopathological characteristics, particularly the percentage of fibrous tissue in the resected sample, may help predict surgical success in congenital ptosis cases.

Degenerative mitral valve disease is a common valvular disease with two arguably distinct phenotypes: fibroelastic deficiency and Barlow's disease. These phenotypes significantly alter the microstructures of the leaflets, particularly the collagen fibers, which are the main mechanical load carriers. The predominant method of investigation is histological sections.

Clin Med (Lond)

July 2024

Department of Neurology, Tallaght University Hospital/The Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin, incorporating the National Children's Hospital (AMNCH), Dublin, Ireland; Stroke Service, Tallaght University Hospital/The Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin, incorporating the National Children's Hospital (AMNCH), Dublin, Ireland; Academic Unit of Neurology, School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.

We describe the case of a male heavy machinery operator who presented from work with a rapidly evolving spinal cord syndrome. Spinal MRI revealed thoracic vertebral body and cord infarction and evolving mild disc prolapse attributed to fibrocartilaginous disc embolism (FCDE). FCDE should be considered as one of the aetiological mechanisms of acute spinal cord infarction in pile-driver/heavy machinery operators, especially in association with adjacent vertebral body infarction and intervertebral disc prolapse.

"Blue Scrub Lid Retraction": Changes in Eyelid Position on the Day of Surgery.

Ophthalmic Plast Reconstr Surg

July 2024

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if the margin-reflex distance 1 (MRD1) on the day of blepharoptosis surgery is higher than the MRD1 measured during the initial clinic visit, potentially due to increased sympathetic drive from pre-surgery stress.
  • Researchers enrolled 38 patients and measured MRD1 using photos taken at both the consult visit and on the surgery day, finding significant increases in MRD1 for most participants.
  • Results showed that MRD1 was notably higher on the day of surgery, suggesting that stress might elevate eyelid position; this indicates that decisions about delaying surgery based solely on pre-operative exams should be made with caution.
