Williams syndrome (WS) is a multi-system condition caused by the deletion of 25-27 coding genes on human chromosome 7. Irritability, gastrointestinal (GI) reflux and slow growth are commonly reported in infants with WS, but less data exist regarding GI concerns in older children and adults with the condition. This study evaluates 62 individuals with WS (31 children aged 3-17, and 31 adults aged 18-62) as well as 36 pediatric and adult controls to assess current and historical rates of common GI symptoms.

Facial Plast Surg Aesthet Med

November 2024

Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA.

Chemodenervation is an important means of treating oral-ocular synkinesis, but upper eyelid treatment is avoided due to risk of blepharoptosis. To measure the change in eyelid position among patients with oral-ocular synkinesis who received botulinum toxin to the upper eyelid orbicularis oculi compared with those who received lateral and lower eyelid treatment alone. In this retrospective clinical study, patients were categorized as having received lateral and lower eyelid botulinum toxin alone or having received upper eyelid botulinum toxin (to the preseptal and orbital orbicularis oculi) along with lateral and lower eyelid treatment.

Management of Previously Failed Coiling and Clipping of a Middle Cerebral Artery Aneurysm.

World Neurosurg

October 2024

Department of Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery, Burdenko Neurosurgical Center, Moscow, Russia; Department of Neurosurgery, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Endovascular coiling techniques have emerged as an alternative and effective approach for treating intracranial aneurysms. However, in some cases, previously coiled aneurysms may require secondary treatment with surgical clipping, presenting a more complex challenge compared with the initial intervention. We present the case of a 39-year-old man with a residual class III Raymond-Roy occlusion partially coiled aneurysm at the left middle cerebral artery bifurcation (Video 1).

Article Synopsis
  • Oculopharyngodistal myopathy (OPDM) is a genetic muscle disease that causes drooping eyelids, trouble swallowing, and weakness in the arms and legs.
  • Recent research found repeating sequences in a gene called ABCD3 in people with OPDM from European backgrounds, while similar repeats were only discovered in certain Asian groups before.
  • These long repeats in the ABCD3 gene might play a role in the muscle problems seen in OPDM, suggesting a link between these repeats and the weakness that affects patients.
