Effect of intravenous clonidine premedication for the bloodless surgical field in patients undergoing middle ear or nasal surgery: A comparison of three different doses.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of intravenous (IV) clonidine premedication for the bloodless surgical field in patients undergoing middle ear or nasal surgery comparing three different doses.

Subjects And Methods: This prospective randomized, clinical trial was performed on 90 normotensive patients belonging to American Society of Anesthesiologists grade I/II, aged 18-60 years, of either sex, undergoing routine middle ear or nasal surgery. These patients were divided into three Groups A, B, and C with 30 patients in each according to the dose of IV clonidine used as premedicant that is 3, 4, and 5 µg/kg, respectively.

Vitamin D receptor expression levels determine the severity and complexity of disease progression among leprosy reaction patients.

We studied the roles of vitamin D and its receptor, VDR, in the progression of leprosy. The majority of individuals with leprosy from Kolkata, India, with a type 1 or type 2 reaction have low levels of vitamin D3 in serum samples. Interestingly, individuals with a type 2 reaction associated with neuritis/erythema nodosum leprosum had very low VDR mRNA expression levels, ranging from 5% to 10%, compared to that of healthy control subjects; these patients also had a high bacilli index, ranging from 3+ to 5+.

The Chhattisgarh state screening programme for the sickle cell gene: a cost-effective approach to a public health problem.

In India, the Chhattisgarh State screening programme for sickle haemoglobin focuses on children aged 3-15 years and has screened over 1,050,440 subjects over the last 6 years. Commencing in the District around the capital Raipur, this programme has now completed screening in 7 of the 27 Districts of Chhattisgarh State. Screening is initially performed by solubility tests on fingerprick samples in the field and those with positive tests have venipunctures for haemoglobin electrophoresis.

BCL11A enhancer haplotypes and fetal hemoglobin in sickle cell anemia.

Background: Fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels in sickle cell anemia patients vary. We genotyped polymorphisms in the erythroid-specific enhancer of BCL11A to see if they might account for the very high HbF associated with the Arab-Indian (AI) haplotype and Benin haplotype of sickle cell anemia.

Methods And Results: Six BCL112A enhancer SNPs and their haplotypes were studied in Saudi Arabs from the Eastern Province and Indian patients with AI haplotype (HbF ~20%), African Americans (HbF ~7%), and Saudi Arabs from the Southwestern Province (HbF ~12%).

Genetics of fetal hemoglobin in tribal Indian patients with sickle cell anemia.

India tops the list of countries with sickle cell disease (SCD) with an estimated 44,000 live births in 2010 and a prevalence of 10%-33%. In the present study, the first from India, we have investigated the effect of genetic variants in the BCL11A, the HMIP (HBS1L-MYB intergenic polymorphism) locus, in addition to the HBB locus, which are known to be associated with fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels, a major modulator of the disease phenotype. The present study was conducted on 240 individuals with SCD and 60 with sickle cell trait.

The screening and morbidity pattern of sickle cell anemia in chhattisgarh.

Our objective was to find out prevalence of sickle cell anemia among the population of three districts (Kanker, Dantewada and Raigarh) of Chhattisgarh with clinical and hematological profile of sickle cell disease patients. A cross sectional study was done. A total of 15,701 persons collectively from three districts voluntarily attended the mobile camp and were screened for sickle cell anemia.

Ankle arthrodesis is a common procedure for tubercular arthritis in India. However, attaining fusion in osteoporotic bones is difficult to achieve by both external and internal fixation methods described in the literature. We report two cases for ankle arthrodesis using an anterior approach to the ankle and internal fixation with a bridging anteriorly placed AO L/AO T plate.

Breast cancer stem cells, pathways and therapeutic perspectives 2011.

The evidence for the existence of a heterogeneous population of cancer stem cells (CSCs) responsible for the initiation and maintenance of cancer has been characterized for several tumors recently. Purification and molecular characterization of normal human mammary stem cells from cultured mammospheres has been achieved, providing evidence supporting a model in which breast tumor heterogeneity is a reflection of a number of CSC-like cells in the tumor. A number of experimental methodologies have been developed to characterize epithelial stem cells, including the expression of cell surface or intracellular markers, mammosphere formation, exclusion of fluorescent dye by a side population, retention of the radionucleotide label, etc.

Assessment of nasal airflow resistance in the healthy population of chattisgarh by active anterior rhinomanometry.

The aim of present study was to define a normal range of total nasal airflow resistance in the healthy population of Chattisgarh. This study was conducted at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Medical College Raipur, Chattisgarh over 93 healthy adults. A proper otolaryngology examination was done prior to the study and all the subjects were free from any type upper respiratory tract infection.
