[Wernicke's encephalopathy in patients with alcohol withdrawal symptoms].

Introduction: Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is caused by lack of thiamin. In Denmark, WE most often occurs in alcoholics. In the present study, we wanted to investigate the frequency of WE in patients hospitalized for treatment of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in a psychiatric emergency ward.

[Personality test and prediction of antidepressive treatment effect in mental illness].

Introduction: The STAR*D project showed that standard treatment of patients with major depression with citalopram resulted in a 36.8% remission in a group of patients. A switch to or supplementing with cognitive therapy substantially increased the remission rate.

[Insufficient documentation of mortality in war].

Mortality estimates can be used for research, to inform or influence policy, for reconciliation processes, to plan health delivery and relief operations and for legal purposes. Many different methods have been applied and each has strengths and weaknesses. Recent years have seen an international effort in various disciplines like humanitarian actors, demographers and forensic anthropologists to cooperate, and efforts are being made to make data collection more systematic and valid.

[Respiratory depression in delirium tremens patients treated with phenobarbital. A retrospective study].

Introduction: Delirium tremens (DT) is the most severe manifestation of alcohol withdrawal which--if untreated--has a high rate of mortality. Barbiturates are the most effective drug but respiratory depression may occur. In the present study we investigated the frequency of respiratory problems in DT patients treated with phenobarbital.

[Affective disorders--depression diagnosis and prognosis].

Affective disorders have been described since ancient Greece. The ICD-10 classification of mania and depression mixes typology with severity. A hierarchical model for depression separating psychotic, melancholic and non-melancholic depression is outlined.
