Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, birthing parents were identified as a high-risk group with greater vulnerability to the harms associated with SARS-CoV-2. This led to necessary changes in perinatal health policies but also to experiences of maternal isolation and loneliness, both in hospital settings, due to infection mitigation procedures, and once home, due to social distancing.

Methods: In this study, we qualitatively explored birthing and postpartum experiences in New York City during the early days of the pandemic when lockdowns were in effect and policies and practices were rapidly changing.

Breaking barriers: why including boys and men is key to HPV prevention.

BMC Med

November 2024

HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies, Gender, Sexuality and Health Area, New York State Psychiatric Institute and Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York, USA.

Despite the common belief that human papillomavirus (HPV) primarily affects women, it is imperative to recognize and address the impact of HPV on boys and men. Overlooking the health implications for males is a notable gap, as efforts have predominantly focused on preventing HPV-related infections in women. This commentary aims to emphasize the importance of HPV awareness and vaccination for boys and men by highlighting the prevalence and consequences of HPV infection, elaborating on the associated health risks, elucidating the benefits of vaccination, and urging readers to recognize the necessity of protecting males from HPV.

A growing body of literature suggests that power spectral density (PSD) slope, measured using electroencephalography (EEG), might reflect synaptic activity and be a useful marker of early brain development. The objective of this article is to identify differences between preterm and full-term infants in PSD slope in active and quiet sleep. This is a secondary analysis of two studies, including premature (N = 33) (30 0/7 and 36 0/7 weeks' gestation) and full-term infants (N = 22).

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and antidepressant medications are both first-line interventions for adult depression, but their relative efficacy in the long term and on outcome measures other than depressive symptomatology is unknown. Individual participant data (IPD) meta-analyses can provide more precise effect estimates than conventional meta-analyses. This IPD meta-analysis compared the efficacy of IPT and antidepressants on various outcomes at post-treatment and follow-up (PROSPERO: CRD42020219891).

Neurocognitive Outcomes Following Perinatal Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection.

Clin Perinatol

December 2024

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, 225 East Chicago Avenue, Box 155, Chicago, IL 60611, USA.

Perinatally acquired human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has the potential to affect neurodevelopment and long-term cognitive and behavioral outcomes. Early, consistent viral suppression through antiretroviral therapy is a priority for protection of neurodevelopment. Monitoring of neurodevelopment and cognitive functioning, referral for appropriate interventions, caregiver/family support, and assessment of mental health, socioeconomic, and environmental risks are important to optimize health and well-being.

Background: Adolescence is a critical developmental period for the study of anorexia nervosa (AN), an illness characterized by extreme restriction of food intake. The maturation of the reward system during adolescence combined with recent neurobiological models of AN led to the hypothesis that early on in illness, restrictive food choices would be associated with activity in nucleus accumbens reward regions, rather than caudate regions identified among adults with AN.

Methods: Healthy adolescents (HC, n = 41) and adolescents with AN or atypical AN (atypAN, n = 76) completed a Food Choice Task during fMRI scanning.

Introduction: The expansion of electronic health record (EHR) data networks over the last two decades has significantly improved the accessibility and processes around data sharing. However, there lies a gap in meeting the needs of Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) hubs, particularly related to real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE).

Methods: We adopted a mixed-methods approach to construct a comprehensive needs assessment that included: (1) A Landscape Context analysis to understand the competitive environment; and (2) Customer Discovery to identify stakeholders and the value proposition related to EHR data networks.
