Few studies have explored the influence of socioeconomic status (SES) on the heat vulnerability of mental health (MH) patients. As individual socioeconomic data was unavailable, we aimed to fill this gap by using the healthcare system type as a proxy for SES. Brazilian national statistics indicate that public patients have lower SES than private.

Introduction: Concomitant drug use is common among opioid-dependent patients in maintenance therapy. These practice guidelines for the biological treatment of alcohol use disorders are an update of the first edition, published in 2008, which was developed by an international Task Force of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP). For this 2016 revision, we performed a systematic review (MEDLINE/PUBMED database, Cochrane Library) of all available publications pertaining to the biological treatment of alcoholism and extracted data from national guidelines. The Task Force evaluated the identified literature with respect to the strength of evidence for the efficacy of each medication and subsequently categorised it into six levels of evidence (A-F) and five levels of recommendation (1-5).

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to explore the relationship between a genetic variation in the NCAN gene and diseases related to alcohol consumption, specifically alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
  • Researchers analyzed genetic data from different groups, including patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis and HCC, as well as healthy controls, finding that the NCAN rs2228603 T allele was more common in those with HCC.
  • The results suggest that the NCAN gene is expressed in the liver, indicating that its polymorphism is a risk factor for HCC in individuals with ALD, but not in those with HCV-related liver cancer.

These practice guidelines for the biological treatment of substance use disorders were developed by an international Task Force of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP). The goal during the development of these guidelines was to review systematically all available evidence pertaining to the treatment of substance use disorders, and to reach a consensus on a series of practice recommendations that are clinically and scientifically meaningful based on the available evidence. These guidelines are intended for use by physicians evaluating and treating people with substance use disorders and are primarily concerned with the biological treatment of adults suffering from substance use disorders.
