Infections With Stenotrophomonas maltophilia in Children Undergoing Anticancer Therapy or Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation: A Multicenter Nationwide Study.

Background: Infections caused by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (SM) have documented high mortality rate in immunocompromised patients.

Aim: This nationwide multicenter study was performed to analyze the epidemiology of SM infections in children undergoing anticancer therapy (pediatric hematology and oncology [PHO]) or hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) over 2012-2019, including incidence and outcome of SM infections, as well as treatment regimens and multidrug resistance.

Methods: Cumulative incidence of SM infections was calculated using the competing risk analysis from the day of diagnosis (PHO setting) or from the day of transplantation (HCT setting).

Introduction: Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) are a recognized form of therapy in cardiology. Apart from the benefits, the use of CIEDs is also associated with the risk of complications, and the most important ones influencing treatment results and prognosis are infectious complications.

Aim: This study aimed to calculate the cost of treatment of CIED-related infections, including transvenous lead extraction and device reimplantation, from the perspective of a Polish hospital.

As the prognosis for life extension of CF patients improves, co-morbidities, including kidney disease, become more common. Identifying those at the highest risk of kidney injury is therefore extremely important.

Guidelines regarding ineffective maintenance of organ functions (futile therapy) in paediatric intensive care units.

In Poland, guidelines for the management of ineffective treatment of children in neonatal and paediatric departments developed by the Polish Neonatal Society and the Polish Paediatric Society, have been published. The specific problems of futile therapy in paediatric anaesthesiology and intensive care units should be defined and solved separately. For this purpose, the guidelines presented below were prepared.

The effect of galvanization and potassium iodide iontophoresis of the throat and larynx on thyroid parameters: a randomized controlled trial.

Few studies have assessed the application and side effects of potassium iodide (KI) iontophoresis. Using a double-blinded randomized controlled trial with a 1:1 parallel-group, we investigated the effect of galvanization and the KI iontophoresis in the throat and larynx on three thyroid parameters. A total of 50 healthy volunteers with normal TSH, FT, and FT levels and lacking focal changes in the thyroid ultrasonography were subjected to 10 electrotherapy treatments.

Utilization of Subcutaneous Cardioverter-Defibrillator in Poland and Europe-Comparison of the Results of Multi-Center Registries.

The implantation of a subcutaneous cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) may be used instead of a traditional transvenous system to prevent sudden cardiac death. Our aim was to compare the characteristics of S-ICD patients from the multi-center registry of S-ICD implantations in Poland with the published results of the European Snapshot Survey on S-ICD Implantation (ESSS-SICDI). We compared data of 137 Polish S-ICD patients with 68 patients from the ESSS-SICDI registry.

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has made us adjust our standards and cope with unpredictable circumstances affecting the whole world, including the medical field. A 2-year-old boy diagnosed with X-linked lymphoproliferative disease type 2 with concomitant positive polymerase chain reaction test for Epstein-Barr virus-DNA was admitted to our transplant ward. His treatment scheme had to be modified at the last moment because of a donor disqualification due to a positive polymerase chain reaction result for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 just before the apheresis.

Background: Home artificial nutrition (HAN) is a developing method of treatment that reduces the need for hospitalizations. The epidemiology of pediatric HAN in Poland has not yet been covered in detail. This study is a longitudinal nationwide analysis of incidence, prevalence, and patients' profile for HAN in Polish children.

Selected Biochemical Blood Parameters and a Risk of Pressure Ulcers in Patients Receiving Treatment in Intensive Care Units.

: This study aimed to assess the level of selected biochemical parameters in venous blood and their potential effects on the development of pressure ulcers in patients treated in intensive care settings. Fifty patients hospitalised in an intensive care unit (ICU) were enrolled for the study. The methods used included controlled observation, literature review and medical record analysis.

Effect of Post-Stroke Rehabilitation on Body Mass Composition in Relation to Socio-Demographic and Clinical Factors.

: Stroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity, mortality and long-term adult disability. The aim of this study was to assess the changes in body mass composition in patients after stroke in connection with selected socio-demographic and clinical factors (sex, age, type of stroke and time from the first symptoms) following the rehabilitation process. : The study group consisted of 100 post-stroke subjects who participated in a comprehensive rehabilitation program for a duration of five weeks.

The European Childhood Obesity Group recently gathered experts in the field who discussed the main available and reliable evidence regarding the role of physical activity on brain health and cognitive functioning in children and adolescents with obesity and who propose here their main conclusions and recommendations.

The ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2), represents a major challenge for healthcare. The involvement of cardiovascular system in COVID‑19 has been proven and increased healthcare system resources are redirected towards handling infected patients, which induces major changes in access to services and prioritization in the management of patients with chronic cardiovascular disease unrelated to COVID‑19. In this expert opinion, conceived by the task force involving the Working Groups on Valvular Heart Diseases and Cardiac Surgery as well as the Association of Cardiovascular Intervention of the Polish Cardiac Society, modification of diagnostic pathways, principles of healthcare personnel protection, and treatment guidelines regarding triage and prioritization are suggested.
