Deficits in the computational processes of reinforcement learning have been suggested to underlie addiction. Additionally, environmental uncertainty, which is encoded in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), modulates reward prediction errors (RPEs) during reinforcement learning and exacerbates addiction. The present study tested whether and how the ACC would have an essential role in drug addiction by failing to use uncertainty to modulate the RPEs during reinforcement learning.

The colorectal neoplasia differentially expressed (CRNDE) gene encodes a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that is the most unregulated among 129 lncRNAs differentially expressed in gliomas. In this study, we confirmed high CRNDE expression in clinical glioma specimens and observed through experiments in human glioma cell lines a novel molecular mechanism by which CRNDE may contribute to glioma pathogenesis. By inducing or silencing CRNDE expression, we detected a positive correlation between CRNDE levels and the proliferative, migratory, and invasive capacities of glioma cells, which were concomitant with a decreased apoptosis rate.

As a hallmark of platelet activation, mean platelet volume (MPV) has been identified to be associated with various malignancies. However, the correlation between MPV, mean platelet volume/platelet count ratio (MPR), and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. The aim of this study is to clarify the relevance of MPV and MPR in patients with locally advanced ESCC.

Functional Characterization of MicroRNA-27a-3p Expression in Human Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Endocrinology

January 2018

Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Food Nutrition and Human Health, China Agricultural University, Beijing, China.

The goal of this study was to characterize the function of microRNA-27a-3p (miR-27a-3p) in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). miR-27a-3p expression was analyzed in excised granulosa cells (GCs) from 21 patients with PCOS and 12 normal patients undergoing in vitro fertilization cycle treatments and in 17 nontreated cuneiform ovarian resection PCOS samples and 13 control ovarian samples from patients without PCOS. We found that the expression of miR-27a-3p was significantly increased in both excised GCs and the ovaries of patients with PCOS compared with the controls.

Institute of Immunology and the CAS Key Laboratory of Innate Immunity and Chronic Disease, CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Sciences, School of Life Sciences and Medical Center, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China

The NLRP3 inflammasome has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a wide variety of human diseases. A few compounds have been developed to inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation, but compounds directly and specifically targeting NLRP3 are still not available, so it is unclear whether NLRP3 itself can be targeted to prevent or treat diseases. Here we show that the compound CY-09 specifically blocks NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

Aim: To determine whether circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in pathological processes of gastric cancer (GC).

Methods: Three circRNAs with differential expression in GC and colorectal cancer were randomly selected for validation by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), using 20 pairs of gastric tissues and normal tissues. Based on the predicted circRNA-miRNA network, we then focused on hsa_circ_0000745, which was found to be down-regulated in 20 GC tissues compared with normal tissues.

Purpose: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness among working age adults. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a kind of noncoding RNAs that are involved in the development of some diseases. Here, we aimed to determine the possible role of circRNAs in the pathogenesis of DR by determining the expression profile of circRNAs in the serum of DR patients.

This study investigated the mechanism of microRNA-21 in regulating IL-6 inflammatory response and cell autophagy in intervertebral disc degeneration. A total of 10 patients with lumbar disc herniation accompanied by nerve root pain (observation group) and 10 patients with lumbar burst fractures (control group) were selected. The nucleus pulposus tissues of the lesion were obtained during operation for cell culture.

Background: Gout is an inflammatory disease that is caused by the increased production of Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) stimulated by monosodium urate (MSU) crystals. However, some hyperuricemia patients, even gouty patients with tophi in the joints, never experience gout attack, which indicates that pathogenic pathways other than MSU participate in the secretion of IL-1β in the pathogenesis of acute gouty arthritis. The ATP-P2X7R-IL-1β axis may be one of these pathways.

It is generally accepted that ovarian cancer is associated with local elevation of gonadotropins (FSH and LH), with repeated ovulation and accompanying expression of inducible cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2). However, the roles of gonadotropins and the concomitant elevation of COX2 in the development of ovarian cancer have not been fully characterized. Herein, we report that excessive FSH/LH exposure did not induce proliferation in ovarian cancer cell lines but significantly promoted cell migration and invasion.
