Massive intra-articular infiltration of proinflammatory macrophages is a prominent feature of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) lesions, which are thought to underlie articular immune dysfunction, severe synovitis and ultimately joint erosion. Here we report an efferocytosis-informed nanoimitator (EINI) for in situ targeted reprogramming of synovial inflammatory macrophages (SIMs) that thwarts their autoimmune attack and reestablishes articular immune homeostasis, which mitigates RA. The EINI consists of a drug-based core with an oxidative stress-responsive phosphatidylserine (PtdSer) corona and a shell composed of a P-selectin-blocking motif, low molecular weight heparin (LMWH).

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women worldwide, and 85% of these patients have non-small cell lung cancer. In recent years, the clinical use of targeted drug therapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors has dramatically changed the treatment landscape for advanced NSCLC. The mechanism and the value of targeted therapies have been a hot topic of research, as is one of the earliest discovered and most frequently mutated oncogenes, which is activated by binding to GTP and triggers a series of cascade reactions in cell proliferation and mitosis.

Vessel segmentation in fundus images is a key procedure in the diagnosis of ophthalmic diseases, which can play a role in assisting doctors in diagnosis. Although current deep learning-based methods can achieve high accuracy in segmenting fundus vessel images, the results are not satisfactory in segmenting microscopic vessels that are close to the background region. The reason for this problem is that thin blood vessels contain very little information, with the convolution operation of each layer in the deep network, this part of the information will be randomly lost.

Background: Peritoneal fibrosis caused by long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the main reason why patients withdraw from PD treatment. Lipid accumulation in the peritoneum was shown to participate in fibrosis, and klotho is a molecule involved in lipid metabolism. GSK343 (enhancer of zeste 2 polycomb repressive complex 2 subunit (EZH2) inhibitor) has been verified to inhibit epithelial mesenchymal transdifferentiation (EMT) and peritoneal fibrosis, but its related mechanism remains unclear.

Detecting atrial fibrillation (AF) of short single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is a key of the wearable heart monitoring system. This study proposed an AF detection method based on feature fusion to identify AF rhythm (A) from other three categories of ECG recordings, that is, normal rhythm (N), other rhythm (O), and noisy (∼) ECG recordings. So, the four categories, that is, N, A, O, and ∼ were identified from the database provided by PhysioNet/CinC Challenge 2017.

Purpose: This study assessed sleep quality in patients with burn scars and investigated risk factors of sleep disorders to guide clinical therapy. From the strategy of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM/3PM), we proposed that risk assessment based on clinical indicators could prompt primary prediction, targeted prevention, and personalized interventions to improve the management of sleep disorders present in patients with burn scars.
Methods: This retrospective study recruited patients with burn scars and healthy volunteers from the Shanghai Burn Treatment Center between 2017 and 2022.

T cells play a crucial role in atherosclerosis, with its infiltration preceding the formation of atheroma. However, how T-cell infiltration is regulated in atherosclerosis remains largely unknown. Here, this work demonstrates that dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) is a novel regulator of T-cell motility in atherosclerosis.

Aim: We aimed to examine risks of major cardiovascular events (MACEs), renal outcomes, and all-cause mortality in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with different diabetic kidney disease (DKD) subtypes.
Methods: A total of 36,509 participants with T2DM recruited from 20 community sites across mainland China were followed up during 2011-2016. DKD subtypes were categorized based on albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio, UACR ≥ 30 mg/g) and reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.

Background: High blood pressure (BP) is highly prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease. However, the thresholds to initiate BP-lowering treatment in this population are unclear. We aimed to examine the associations between BP levels and clinical outcomes and provide evidence on potential thresholds to initiate BP-lowering therapy in people with chronic kidney disease.

Animal models and static cultures of intestinal epithelial cells are commonly used platforms for exploring mercury ion (Hg(II)) transport. However, they cannot reliably simulate the human intestinal microenvironment and monitor cellular physiology in situ; thus, the mechanism of Hg(II) transport in the human intestine is still unclear. Here, a gut-on-a-chip integrated with transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) sensors and electrochemical sensors is proposed for dynamically simulating the formation of the physical intestinal barrier and monitoring the transport and absorption of Hg(II) in situ.

Background & Aims: Among individuals with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis and acute variceal bleeding (AVB), the Baveno VII workshop recommended pre-emptive TIPS in those with a Child-Pugh score of 8-9 and active bleeding at initial endoscopy (Child B8-9 + AB criteria). Nevertheless, whether this criterion is superior to the CLIF-Consortium acute decompensation score (CLIF-C ADs) remains unclear.
Methods: Data on 1,021 consecutive individuals with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis and AVB from 13 university hospitals in China who were treated with pre-emptive TIPS (n = 297) or drug plus endoscopic treatment (n = 724) between 2010 to 2019 were retrospectively analysed.

The water-selective channel protein aquaporin-4 (AQP4) contributes to the migration and proliferation of gliomas, and to their resistance to therapy. Here we show, in glioma cell cultures, in subcutaneous and orthotopic gliomas in rats, and in glioma tumours in patients, that transmembrane water-efflux rate is a sensitive biomarker of AQP4 expression and can be measured via conventional dynamic-contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. Water-efflux rates correlated with stages of glioma proliferation as well as with changes in the heterogeneity of intra-tumoural and inter-tumoural AQP4 in rodent and human gliomas following treatment with temozolomide and with the AQP4 inhibitor TGN020.

Diffuse gliomas are the most common malignant primary brain tumors. Identification of isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) mutations aids the diagnostic classification of these tumors and the prediction of their clinical outcomes. While histology continues to play a key role in frozen section diagnosis, as a diagnostic reference and as a method for monitoring disease progression, recent research has demonstrated the ability of multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences for predicting IDH genotypes.
