Enhancing Smart Sensor Tag Sensing Performance-Based on Modified Plasma-Assisted Electrochemical Exfoliated Graphite Nanosheet.

Polymers (Basel)

November 2022

Office of the Dean (Research) and Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science Technology, Alliance University (Central Campus), Chandapura-Anekal Main Road, Bengaluru 562106, Karnataka, India.

Water that penetrates through cracks in concrete can corrode steel bars. There is a need for reliable and practical seepage sensing technology to prevent failure and determine the necessary maintenance for a concrete structure. Therefore, we propose a modified plasma-assisted electrochemical exfoliated graphite (MPGE) nanosheet smart tag.

(PN) exerts cardiovascular-disease-protective effects, but the effect of PN on reducing vascular calcification (VC) is unknown. Under the VC process, however, endothelial bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) signals connect endothelial and smooth muscle cells. To investigate the effects of PN water extract (PNWE) on BMP-2 expression, human EA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how pre-operative anemia affects long-term survival in patients with vertebral fractures undergoing vertebroplasty.
  • The research involved analyzing 167 patients, revealing that those with anemia (hemoglobin levels <12 g/dL) had a significantly higher risk of mortality compared to those with healthier levels.
  • Results suggest that increasing hemoglobin levels before surgery can lower mortality risks, underscoring the importance of monitoring anemia in elderly patients facing this surgical procedure.

[The Response of Tribal Cultural Care to the Physical and Emotional Needs of Older Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic].

Hu Li Za Zhi

December 2022

PhD, Associate Professor, Ph.D. Program in Health and Social Welfare for Indigenous Peoples, Providence University, Taiwan, ROC.

As Taiwan's society ages, Tribal Cultural Health Stations serve as in situ long-term care centers that are committed to building a long-term care service model for indigenous peoples based on cultural care. The cultural sensitivity, cultural ability, and tribal ability of long-term care planners and professional helpers remains insufficient, making it difficult to achieve the policy goals of "designing for the tribes and for the locals" and "creating a cultural care mechanism". However, based on a foundation of local blood and geo-relationship and through the care expertise and interpersonal network established through long-term tribal cultivation and service, a cultural care mechanism that meets local awareness, local needs, and human trust has been formed by expanding linkages among the resources of all local stakeholders.

Social insects have evolved different search strategies to find target objects in unknown environments. In the present study, the searching behavior of the tropical fire ant was investigated in a circular arena. The average time, search path, speed, and search patterns of worker ants in a circular arena were determined.

Background: Stroke is the third largest cause of death both worldwide and in Taiwan. Among the various stroke subtypes, lacunae strokes account for 20 to 30% of the total stroke population. Through vigorous risk control factors, the effective prevention and the long-term functional outcome remains are yet to be investigated.

We aimed to investigate the association between preoperative body mass index (BMI) and postoperative long-term mortality in patients who underwent a vertebroplasty. We retrospectively enrolled patients with a vertebral compression fracture who underwent a vertebroplasty between May 2013 and June 2020 in a medical center in Taiwan. The survival status of the study sample was confirmed by the end of March 2021.

Differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTCs), which have papillary and follicular types, are common endocrine malignancies worldwide. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a particular type of cancer cells within bulk tumors involved in cancer initiation, drug resistance, and metastasis. Cells with high intracellular aldehyde hydrogenase (ALDH) activity are a population of CSCs in DTCs.

Adenomyosis is a uterine pathology characterized by a deep invasion of endometrial glands and stroma, disrupting the endometrial−myometrial interface (EMI). Interleukin-18 (IL-18) system is a dominant cytokine involved in the menstrual cycle of human endometrium. IL-18 may play a defensive role against maternal immune response in the uterine cavity.

Long-wavelength light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are potential deep-red and near infrared light sources with solution-processable simple device architecture, low-voltage operation, and compatibility with inert metal electrodes. Many scientific efforts have been made to material design and device engineering of the long-wavelength LECs over the past two decades. The materials designed the for long-wavelength LECs cover ionic transition metal complexes, small molecules, conjugated polymers, and perovskites.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines how adding varying amounts of black rice flour affects flaky rolls, focusing on their physical and chemical properties, including dough stability and nutrient content.
  • - Results show that increased black rice flour leads to better protein and dietary fiber levels, while also reducing glucose release at higher inclusion rates.
  • - A 5% addition of black rice flour is identified as optimal, improving dough stability and the final product's nutrition, texture, and overall quality.

Chronic exposure of skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for skin ageing, which includes degradation of the epidermal and dermal layers. Filtering UV light is key in the sunscreen industry. We studied the effects of organic UV filters on hyaluronan (HA) metabolism and skin hydration in human HaCaT keratinocytes.

Background: Over 50 Taiwanese firefly species have been discovered, but scientists lack information regarding most of their genetics, bioluminescent features, and cohabitating phenomena. In this study, we focus on morphological species identification and phylogeny reconstructed by barcoding, as well as luminescent characteristics of cohabited Taiwanese firefly species to determine the key factors that influenced how distinct bioluminescent species evolved to coexist and proliferate within the same habitat.

Methods: In this study, 366 specimens from nine species were collected in northern Taiwan from April to August, 2016-2019.

The River Thurso, North Scotland, receives substantial terrestrial deliveries of dissolved organic matter (DOM) leached from Europe's most extensive blanket bogs. The relatively short distance between peatlands and coastal ocean offers potential for research to investigate source-to-sea processing of terrigenous dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Here, we determined DOC concentrations in the bulk (< 0.

Self-Cognizant Bionic Liquid Sensor for Pathogen Diagnosis.

Cyborg Bionic Syst

September 2021

Providence University, Taiwan (Province of China).

As observed in the outbreaks of SARS and swine flu, as well as many other infectious diseases, the huge volume of human traffic across numerous enclosed public venues has posed immense challenges to preventing the spread of communicable diseases. There is an urgent need for effective disease surveillance management in public areas under pandemic outbreaks. The physicochemical properties associated with ionic liquids make them particularly suited for molecular communications in sensing networks where low throughput is quite adequate for pathogen detection.

The treatment of acute ischemic stroke is heavily time-dependent, and even though, with the most efficient treatment, the long-term functional outcome is still highly variable. In this current study, the authors selected acute ischemic stroke patients who were qualified for intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator and followed by intra-arterial thrombectomy. With primary outcome defined by the functional level in a 1-year follow-up, we hypothesize that patients with older age are at a disadvantage in post-stroke recovery.

We sought to analyze the biomechanical effects which both different numbers and locations of screws have on three different clavicle hook plates, as well as any possible causes of sub-acromial bone erosion and peri-implant clavicular fractures. This study built thirteen groups of finite element models using three different clavicle hook plates (short plates, long plates, and posterior hook offset plates) in varying numbers and locations of the screws. The von Mises stress distribution of the clavicle and hook plate, as well as the reaction force of the acromion was evaluated.
