Background High-density lipoprotein (HDL) particle concentration likely outperforms HDL cholesterol in predicting atherosclerotic cardiovascular events. Whether size-based HDL subspecies explain the atheroprotective associations of HDL particle concentration remains unknown. Our objective was to assess whether levels of specific size-based HDL subspecies associate with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in a multiethnic pooled cohort and improve risk prediction beyond traditional atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Objectives: This paper reviews the published data and reports 3 cases of thrombosis involving CoreValve (Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minnesota) and 1 involving Edward Sapien (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, California) devices. Three of these cases had pathological findings at autopsy.

Background: Only a limited number of cases of valve dysfunction with rapid increase of transvalvular aortic gradients or aortic insufficiency post-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) have been described.

Cancers in post-transplant patients exhibit the same molecular and cellular properties as those in their non-transplanted counterparts and arise secondary to uncontrolled/sustained growth, apoptosis resistance, inhibition of tumor suppressors, immortalization of cells with invasion, and and metastasis. Disruption of DNA repair mechanisms, upregulation of angiogenic growth factors, impaired viral immunity and activated oncogenic viruses contribute to the initiation of malignancies in this population. This article extends and addresses the concerns in this area.
