This article presents a set of data obtained during the evaluation of a horizontal flow tubular flocculator for the provision of drinking water in developing communities. The HFTF is presented as an alternative technology to replace conventional flocculators, allowing high efficiency in the subsequent sedimentation and filtration processes. For obtaining the data, experimental tests were carried out using lengths of 68.

Efficient Human Violence Recognition for Surveillance in Real Time.

Sensors (Basel)

January 2024

Academic Department of Systems and Informatics Engineering, Professional School of Computer Science, Faculty of Production and Services Engineering, San Agustin of Arequipa National University, Arequipa 04001, Peru.

Human violence recognition is an area of great interest in the scientific community due to its broad spectrum of applications, especially in video surveillance systems, because detecting violence in real time can prevent criminal acts and save lives. The majority of existing proposals and studies focus on result precision, neglecting efficiency and practical implementations. Thus, in this work, we propose a model that is effective and efficient in recognizing human violence in real time.

A new automatic method for tracking rats in the Morris water maze.

Heliyon

July 2023

Development and Research Laboratory, Faculty of Science and Philosophy, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru.

Morris water maze (MWM) test is widely used to evaluate the learning and memory deficits in rodents. Image processing and pattern recognition can be used to analyse videos and recognize automatically the tracking in MWM. There are several commercial and free access software that allows analyzing the behavioral tasks although they also have limitations such as automation, cost, user intervention among other things.

Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have aroused a lot of interest as reliable blood diagnostic biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we investigated the panel of expressed blood miRNAs in response to aggregated Aβ peptides infused in the hippocampus of adult rats to mimic events of the early onset of non-familial AD disorder. Aβ peptides in the hippocampus led to cognitive impairments associated with an astrogliosis and downregulation of circulating miRNA-146a-5p, -29a-3p, -29c-3p, -125b-5p, and-191-5p.

The guarantee of access to safe drinking water for rural communities is a great challenge due to the increase in contamination and deterioration of water sources. Rural areas face technological, financial, and operational limitations, having poor water quality, generally. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a vertical tubular flocculator (VTF) to be used as part of the purification process in rural areas where small flows are used.

Automatic Method for Vickers Hardness Estimation by Image Processing.

J Imaging

December 2022

Professional School of Systems Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Urban Planning, Universidad Señor de Sipán, Chiclayo 14000, Lambayeque, Peru.

Hardness is one of the most important mechanical properties of materials, since it is used to estimate their quality and to determine their suitability for a particular application. One method of determining quality is the Vickers hardness test, in which the resistance to plastic deformation at the surface of the material is measured after applying force with an indenter. The hardness is measured from the sample image, which is a tedious, time-consuming, and prone to human error procedure.
