Thrombotic events during pregnancy are burdened by an increased risk of morbidity and mortality, despite innovations in their diagnosis and treatment. Given their multifactorial etiology, it is important to understand all the pathophysiological mechanisms but especially to achieve correct and timely diagnosis. Pulmonary embolism (PE) during pregnancy represents a rare event, with an incidence of 1 per 1000 pregnancies, but it is also one of the leading causes of death during pregnancy.

Background: The severity of systemic congestion is associated with increased portal vein flow pulsatility (PVP).

Aim: To determine the usefulness of PVP as a marker of decongestion and prognosis in acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) patients.

Methods: 105 patients, 60% of whom were men, were hospitalized with ADHF, and their PVP index (PVPI) was calculated (maximum velocity-minimum velocity/maximum velocity) × 100 on admission and before discharge, along with their EVEREST score, inferior vena cava diameter (IVC), NT-proBNP, serum sodium, and glomerular filtration rate.

Introduction: Renal tumors do not benefit from an unanimously accepted tumor marker. We tried to evaluate the advantages of preoperative C-reactive protein (CRP) values and monitor the dynamic of CRP values from the perspective of the evolution of patients diagnosed with Grawitz tumors.

Patients, Materials And Methods: We researched the medical records of patients with renal parenchymal tumors admitted to the Urological Clinic in Iaşi, Romania, between 01.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the rise of infectious complications associated with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), highlighting that infections are becoming more common with these procedures.
  • A systematic search of medical databases yielded 18 relevant articles covering 7,507 patients, all of whom received antibiotic prophylaxis and some were treated for infections before surgery.
  • Findings indicate that longer operative times, positive preoperative urine cultures, and multi-tract PCNL significantly increase the risk of developing postoperative sepsis/SIRS, while factors like age and body mass index show no notable impact on patient outcomes.

Ever since it was first described in 1760, acute type A aortic dissection has created difficulties in its management. The recent COVID-19 pandemic revealed that extrapulmonary manifestations of this condition may occur, and recent reports suggested that aortic dissection may be amongst them since it shares a common physiopathology, that is, hyper-inflammatory syndrome. Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass in the setting of COVID-19-positive patients carries a high risk of postoperative respiratory failure.

The association of an ostium primum-type defect with a cleft anterior mitral valve is known in the medical literature as the partial form of an atrioventricular canal. We present a case report about a 20-year-old woman with minimal symptomatology that discovered her pathology on routine echocardiography. Today, surgical operation remains the gold standard in such pathologies, especially mandatory when there is important valvular regurgitation and left-to-right shunt.

Pre-procedure mitral regurgitation (MR) is a frequent coexistent finding in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), and most of them (up to 55%) experience a significant improvement in MR after the procedure. Although seldom described, mitral valve perforation after TAVR is a potentially serious complication that physicians should be aware of, as moderate or severe MR in TAVR recipients is associated with a high early mortality rate. We herein describe the case of a 65-year-old man presenting with worsening heart failure symptoms 5 months after TAVR due to an intraprocedural anterior mitral leaflet perforation and discuss the diagnostic process and therapeutic course of the case.

Chondrosarcomas represent approximately 20% of primary malignant bone cancers, being known as the most frequent neoplasia of the anterior thoracic wall. In our case, we present a case of a primary sternal chondrosarcoma in a 50-year-old female patient that has been polychemiotherapy and radiotherapy treated for breast cancer. Despite the initial treated malignancy of breast cancer in the personal pathologic history of the patient, it was discovered that the sternal tumor was not a metastatic disease from the breast neoplasm.

Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a cancer-prone, autosomal dominant syndrome caused by underlying germline gene mutations of , a tumor-suppressor gene encoding the p53 protein with a major role in apoptosis, DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. Cumulative cancer incidence for LFS patients by the age of 70 years is 80-100%, mostly involving adrenocortical carcinoma, brain tumors, bone and soft tissue sarcomas, leukemia and female breast cancer from the age of 20 years. Dominant negative variant is correlated with an increased tumorigenesis risk in LFS.

The purpose of the study was to establish whether shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is a potential harmful first-line treatment for ureteric stones where ureteroscopy (URS) is necessary as a second-line treatment. Medical records of patients with ureteric stones who underwent either URS as the only therapy applied or SWL followed by URS over two years were retrospectively evaluated. In total, 158 patients were included: 79 patients in Group A (no SWL) and 79 in Group B (prior SWL before URS).
