Accuracy of surgical death information: comparison of data held by Victorian Audit of Surgical Mortality and Victorian Agency for Health Information.

Background: The Victorian Audit of Surgical Mortality (VASM) investigates all surgically related deaths in Victoria. The Victorian Admitted Episodes Database (VAED) is an administrative dataset maintained by the Health Department's Victorian Agency of Health Information (VAHI). We have reviewed clinical records to assess the correlation between deaths reported to the databases.

The mTLE network hypothesis is evident in seizure semiology and interictal comorbidities, both reflecting limbic network dysfunction. The network generating seizures also supports essential physiological functions, including memory, emotion, mood, and sleep.

Exploring the relationship between media use and depressive symptoms among gender diverse youth: findings of the Mental Health Days Study.

Background: Over the past decades, media use has become a key aspect of young people's daily lives, significantly shaping their social interactions, learning processes, and recreational pursuits. At the same time, healthcare professionals and researchers are increasingly concerned about the impact of media use on young people's mental health. This concern is particularly relevant for gender diverse youth who may have distinct experiences with media that could impact their mental health uniquely compared to their peers, such as increased exposure to cyberbullying and negative content regarding their gender identity.

Weight Gain After Adenotonsillectomy in Children With Mild Obstructive Sleep-Disordered Breathing: Exploratory Analysis of the PATS Randomized Clinical Trial.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This was an exploratory analysis of the Pediatric Adenotonsillectomy Trial for Snoring (PATS) randomized clinical trial of adenotonsillectomy vs watchful waiting for mild oSDB (snoring with obstructive apnea-hypopnea index of <3 events/hour) that took place at 7 pediatric tertiary care centers across the US and included 458 children aged 3.

Background: Dietary guidelines recommend a shift to plant-based diets. Fortified soymilk, a prototypical plant protein food used in the transition to plant-based diets, usually contains added sugars to match the sweetness of cow's milk and is classified as an ultra-processed food. Purpose: This study aims to characterize the pharmacokinetics, safety, tolerability, and exploratory efficacy of upadacitinib, an oral Janus kinase inhibitor approved for treating moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (AD) in adults and adolescents, in children with severe AD.

Methods: In an open-label, multiple-dose, Phase 1 study, pediatric patients with severe AD from two age groups (2 to <6 years and 6 to <12 years) received bodyweight-based dosing regimens of upadacitinib using either twice-daily immediate-release (IR) oral solution or once-daily extended-release (ER) tablets. A pharmacokinetic assessment was conducted on Day 7 of the study, which was followed by a long-term safety and exploratory efficacy evaluation for up to 108 weeks.

Soft condensed matter is challenging to study due to the vast time and length scales that are necessary to accurately represent complex systems and capture their underlying physics. Multiscale simulations are necessary to study processes that have disparate time and/or length scales, which abound throughout biology and other complex systems. Herein we present ezAlign, an open-source software for converting coarse-grained molecular dynamics structures to atomistic representation, allowing multiscale modeling of biomolecular systems.

Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy in diabetes: an update with a focus on management.

Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is an under-recognised yet highly prevalent microvascular complication of diabetes. CAN affects approximately 20% of people with diabetes, with recent studies highlighting the presence of CAN in prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance and/or impaired fasting glucose), indicating early involvement of the autonomic nervous system. Understanding of the pathophysiology of CAN continues to evolve, with emerging evidence supporting a potential link between lipid metabolites, mitochondrial dysfunction and genetics.

It remains unclear how circulating concentrations of trimethylamine -oxide and its related dietary and gut microbe-derived metabolites (choline, betaine, carnitine, γ-butyrobetaine, and crotonobetaine) affect incident heart failure (HF).

We now sought to validate this model in an independent cohort of children to the one in which the model was developed.

Background: Although artificial and non-nutritive sweeteners are widely used and generally recognized as safe by the US and European Union regulatory agencies, there have been no clinical trials to assess either long-term cardiovascular disease risks or short-term cardiovascular disease-relevant phenotypes. Recent studies report that fasting plasma levels of erythritol, a commonly used sweetener, are clinically associated with heightened incident cardiovascular disease risks and enhance thrombosis potential in vitro and in animal models. Effects of dietary erythritol on thrombosis phenotypes in humans have not been examined.

What defines dry skin? Correlating a range of skin hydration parameters with In Vivo Confocal Raman Spectroscopy.

Objective: While there are a wide range of approaches for the assessment of skin hydration, it is not always clear how data from them relate to one another or to the skin itself. With the development of in vivo Confocal Raman Spectroscopy (ICRS), it has become possible to measure water concentration as a function of protein/depth within the stratum corneum (SC). This article reports a comparison between electrical skin hydration measures/visual/optical grading and water concentration profiles measured using ICRS, to better understand the relationship between these approaches.
