Introduction: Rehabilitation after the maxillectomy is challenging to the clinician and the patient. Since the invention of the implants, the rehabilitation has changed the treatment strategies. Hence in our study, we evaluated the maxillary obturator that is implant supported.

Comparison of Oral Mucosal Biopsies Done Using Scalpel and Diode Lasers: A Vivo Study.

Background: As dental lasers are becoming more popular in the branch of oral medicine for its various advantages and applications, this study was carried out to evaluate better mode of obtaining oral biopsies which is a common and inevitable procedure for providing final diagnosis in majority of conditions.

Methodology: In this study, a total of 60 patients who required biopsy for final diagnosis of oral mucosal lesions as part of diagnosis in department of Oral Medicine were selected, out of which 30 were subjected to scalpel biopsies and 30 patients were subjected to diode laser biopsies. A 980 nm Zolar plus diode laser was used for the study.

Background: Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress play a vital role in the pathogenesis of various diseases of the oral cavity including periodontal disease. Phytochemicals present in plants with antioxidant (AO) and anti-inflammatory properties could aid as a therapeutic adjunct in the management of these diseases.

Objective: The research for analyzing the smile characteristics in the Indian population has been limited with contradictory outcomes. This consensus statement aims to critically review the literature and provide basic practice guidelines on dental aesthetics related to the Indian population.

Clinical Considerations: 9 clinicians and 6 resource persons from dental colleges in India collaborated in this consensus statement which covered 6 topics along with 6 introductory and 6 conclusive remarks.

Development of third molars and their influence on the dental arch is a major concern in clinical dentistry especially, orthodontics and oral surgery. Lately, their position, eruption potential and development has become a subject of interest in forensic practice. The present study was aimed to determine whether if there is any difference in the development of the mandibular third molars according to the impaction type.

Evaluation of the periodontal viruses in cardiovascular patients associated with periodontitis.

Objectives: The current study aimed in evaluating the prevalence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and herpes simplex virus (HSV) in periodontitis and/or coronary artery disease (CAD) patients to compare with their healthy controls and insist their significance in the same.

Methodology: Two hundred and forty patients were divided into 4 groups. Non-periodontitis+non-cardiac (NP+NC) = 60 patients, periodontitis+non-cardiac patients (P+NC) = 60 patients, non-periodontitis+cardiac patients (NP+C) = 60 patients, and periodontitis+cardiac (P+C) = 60 patients.

Accuracy of four dental age estimation methods in determining the legal age threshold of 18 years among South Indian adolescents and young.

The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy, specificity and sensitivity of four commonly used methods of dental age estimation in a sample of south Indian adolescents and young adults aged between 14 and 30 years, with an age threshold of 18 years, using receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) and the area under the curve (AUC). A total of 1070 orthopantomograms (535 males and 535 females) of adolescents and young adults of south Indian origin were collected retrospectively and interpreted. The effectiveness of each method was evaluated by using sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp), likelihood ratios (LR+ and LR-) and AUC.

A test to study the influence of impaction on mandibular third molar development and forensic age estimation in a sample of south Indian children and young adults.

It has been argued that the impaction of the third molars could result in delayed maturation, which, in turn, could affect age estimations in criminal proceedings. In view of this, the present study was undertaken to determine whether the impaction status could delay the chronological process of third molar mineralization in a sample of south Indian children and young adults. The orthopantomograms (OPGs) of 915 children and young adults of south Indian origin aged between 15 and 22 years were evaluated.

To meet this challenge, the Indian Board of Micro Restorative and Endodontics under the aegis of the Indian Association of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics has begun a fellowship program in Micro Restorative and Endodontics; the main aim being to improve the knowledge and skills of these specialists empowering them to go a step higher and beyond their areas of specialization. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a major health concern globally ever since it was declared as Pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020. Due to the evolving and contagious nature of coronavirus, it continues to remain a threat for dental health-care personnel. As the virus travels from person-to-person via direct contact through droplet inhalation, cough, and sneeze or through contact transmission, it remains infectious even through inanimate surfaces.

Comparative Evaluation of pH and Cytotoxicity of Zinc Oxide-Ozonated Eugenol and Conventional Zinc Oxide Eugenol as Endodontic Sealers.

Background: Eugenol released from zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE)-based sealants may cause irritation to the periapical tissues and has cytotoxic potential. Ozone therapy has numerous clinical applications with humans because of its bactericidal action, detoxifying effect, stimulation of angiogenesis, and wound-healing capacity. Therefore ozone can be incorporated in ZOE sealer to exploit these properties.

Background: Viruses are considered to be a newer family associated with inflammatory diseases. Yet the role of periodontal viruses in coronary artery diseases (CAD) remains unclear. Thus, the current study aims to evaluate the prevalence of periodontal viruses and compare the same in cardiac samples of CAD patients with and without periodontitis.

Objective: Virulence factors (VFs) among the clinical strains of enterococci play a vital role in pathogenesis. This study was aimed to screen for cylA, asa1, gelE, esp and hyl among Enterococcus faecalis (n = 89) and E. faecium (n = 51) by multiplex PCR.

Comparative efficacy of three topical anesthetics on 7-11-year-old children: a randomized clinical study.

Background: This study evaluated the efficacy of three intraoral topical anesthetics in reducing the injection needle prick pain from local anesthetic among children aged 7-11 years old.

Methods: It is a prospective, Interventional, parallel design, single-blind, randomized clinical trial in which subjects (n=90) aged 7-11 years were included in the study based on an inclusion criteria. Subjects were divided into three groups based on computer-generated randomization with an allocation ratio of 1:1:1.

Background: This study evaluated the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) distraction and counter-stimulation (CS) on dental anxiety and pain perception to local anesthesia in children.

Methods: A prospective, randomized, single-blinded interventional clinical trial with a parallel design was used. Seventy children 7-11 years old who required local anesthesia (LA) for pulp therapy or tooth extraction were recruited and allocated to two groups with equal distribution based on the intervention.

An eight-year-old girl child reported to the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology with the chief complaint of unerupted permanent teeth for past two years. The child presented features like disproportionately short stature, rhizomelic shortening of arms and legs, long face, frontal bossing and saddle nose. Based on the findings of chest and spine radiographs and ultrasound the case was diagnosed as a rare bone disorder "Achondroplasia".

Management of Oehler's Type III Dens Invaginatus Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography.

Dens Invaginatus is a dental malformation that poses diagnostic difficulties in the clinical context. This anomaly may increase the risk of pulp disease and can potentially complicate endodontic procedure due to the aberrant root canal anatomy. Compared to conventional radiographs, three-dimensional images obtained with Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) are invaluable in the diagnosis of the extent of this anomaly and in the appropriate treatment planning.
