Background: Worldwide the availability to Hormonal Contraceptives (HC) varies from over the counter (OTC) to prescription-only access. In various countries pharmacists are allowed to prescribe HC, although conditions may be different. In Switzerland, HC require a prescription from a physician, although Swiss law allows pharmacists to dispense prescription-only medications in justified exceptional cases without a valid physician's prescription.

Background And Aims: Patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) are at a very high risk of cardiovascular events and strongly benefit from lowering LDL cholesterol (LDL-C); updated European Society of Cardiology guidelines recommend an LDL-C target of at least <55 mg/dl for these patients. Whether the presence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) affects LDL-C target achievement in PAD patients is unknown and is addressed in the present study.
Methods: We investigated an unselected consecutive series of 319 patients with sonographically proven PAD, of whom 136 (42.

While lateral flow test formats can be utilized with whole blood and low sample volumes, their diagnostic characteristics are inferior to immunoassays based on chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technology. CLIAs and ELISAs can be automated to a high degree but commonly require larger serum or plasma volumes for sample processing. We addressed the suitability of EDTA-anticoagulated whole blood as an alternative sample material for antibody testing against SARS-CoV-2 by electro-CLIA (ECLIA; Roche, Rotkreuz, Switzerland) and ELISA (IgG and IgA; Euroimmun, Germany).

Background: Elevated serum levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), one of the main regulators of calcium homeostasis and vitamin D metabolism, have been proposed as predictors of mortality. The impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on the putative association between PTH and mortality has not been investigated thus far.
Aim: The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of T2DM on the power of PTH to predict mortality risk.

Handgrip strength (HGS) is a validated and simple technique to estimate skeletal muscular strength. Whether HGS is a predictor of overall mortality in patients with established coronary artery disease (CAD) is not known, this question is therefore addressed in the present study. We prospectively investigated a cohort of 691 patients with angiographically proven CAD.

The electrocardiographic PR interval reflects atrioventricular conduction, and is associated with conduction abnormalities, pacemaker implantation, atrial fibrillation (AF), and cardiovascular mortality. Here we report a multi-ancestry (N = 293,051) genome-wide association meta-analysis for the PR interval, discovering 202 loci of which 141 have not previously been reported. Variants at identified loci increase the percentage of heritability explained, from 33.

We developed an individual risk score (PAD) based on the combined predictive value for mortality, including (1) age, (2) severity of PAD, and (3) extent of atherosclerosis. Patients (n = 1310) with symptomatic PAD were followed up for a mean of 50 ± 26 months.

Four biomarkers are commonly employed to diagnose B12 deficiency: vitamin B12 (B12), holotranscobalamin (HoloTC), methylmalonic acid (MMA), and homocysteine (Hcy). 4cB12, a combined index of the B12 status, has been suggested to improve the recognition of B12 deficiency. We aimed to evaluate the four different markers for detecting B12 deficiency, as determined by 4cB12.

Betatrophin is a protein which is produced by the liver and by adipose tissue. There are no clear data about serum betatrophin's cardiovascular role and it is unknown, whether betatrophin is associated with the risk of cardiovascular death. This article provides additional data on the association of betatrophin with its power to predict cardiovascular death in coronary patients.

Benefits and safety on statins have been well-established over 20 years of research. Despite this, the vast majority of patients are not adequately treated and do not achieve the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol target levels. This is mainly due to poor adherence, which is associated with dangerous and sometimes fatal outcomes.

Background And Aims: Betatrophin, also known as angiopoietin-like protein 8 (ANGPTL8) or lipasin, is a nutritionally-regulated mammalian-specific protein secreted by the liver and adipose tissue. Many conflicting data exist with respect to its association with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), insulin resistance, and lipid markers, but no data are available on its association with cardiovascular risk.
Methods: We measured betatrophin in 553 coronary patients undergoing coronary angiography for the evaluation of established or suspected stable coronary artery disease (CAD) and prospectively recorded cardiovascular events during a follow-up of up to 8 years.

Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have been linked to chronic kidney disease. Little is known about the association between circulating miRNAs and kidney function in patients at high cardiovascular risk. We therefore investigated the association between a panel of candidate miRNAs and kidney function, based on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), in two independent cohorts of patients undergoing coronary angiography.

PCR based methods are widely used for HLA-B*27 screening. To refine HLA-B*27 testing we aimed at establishing a real-time PCR protocol to detect the HLA-B*27 allele directly in blood samples, without DNA extraction.

Objectives: Information on performance of different stent platforms in endovascular revascularisation of femoropopliteal lesions is controversial and scarce.
Methods: Interwoven nitinol (INS, Supera) were compared with drug eluting (DES, Zilver PTx) stents with primary intervention for femoropopliteal lesions. The primary endpoint was time to clinically driven target lesion revascularisation (CD-TLR) within 12 months.
The transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) polymorphism rs7903146 is known to be tightly associated with an elevated risk for type 2 diabetes, whereas the molecular mechanisms remain elusive. We evaluated the metabolic profile of a total of 394 patients' serum samples with respect to their rs7903146 genotype using targeted metabolomics in a discovery (n = 154) and a validation (n = 240) study. We have identified serotonin as the top metabolite being increased in carriers of the risk allele.
