Background and Objective: Small, dense low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) are considered more atherogenic than normal size LDLs. However, the measurement of small, dense LDLs requires sophisticated laboratory methods, such as ultracentrifugation, gradient gel electrophoresis, or nuclear magnetic resonance. We aimed to analyze whether the LDL apolipoprotein B (LDLapoB)-to-LDL cholesterol (LDLC) ratio is associated with cardiovascular mortality and whether this ratio represents a biomarker for small, dense LDLs.

Pharmacists' Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Recommendations.

Pharmacy (Basel)

April 2022

Kantonsspital St. Gallen, 9007 St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Seasonal influenza vaccination rates among European countries remain low despite the World Health Organization's recommendations to vaccinate high-risk groups. Healthcare worker recommendations are strong predictors of increased vaccination uptake in the population. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze seasonal influenza vaccination recommendation behavior among pharmacists towards high-risk groups including patients, coworkers, and pharmacists' family members during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objectives: Austria, and particularly its westernmost federal state Vorarlberg, developed an extremely high incidence rate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare workers (HCWs) worldwide are known to have an increased risk of contracting the disease within the working environment and, therefore, the seroprevalence in this population is of particular interest. We thus aimed to analyse SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody dynamics in Vorarlberg HCWs.

Background: 16S rDNA-PCR for the identification of a bacterial species is an established method. However, the DNA extraction reagents as well as the PCR reagents may contain residual bacterial DNA, which consequently generates false-positive PCR results. Additionally, previously used methods are frequently time-consuming.

Structure of ATP synthase from ESKAPE pathogen .

Sci Adv

February 2022

Department of Life Sciences, Imperial College London, Exhibition Road, London SW7 2AZ, UK.

The global spread of multidrug-resistant infections urgently calls for the identification of novel drug targets. We solved the electron cryo-microscopy structure of the FF-adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) synthase from in three distinct conformational states. The nucleotide-converting F subcomplex reveals a specific self-inhibition mechanism, which supports a unidirectional ratchet mechanism to avoid wasteful ATP consumption.
