Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Is Associated With Type 1 Diabetes: A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Study.

Background: The pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) remains unclear; previous studies revealed the underlying connection between IPF and diabetes, but there is no consensual opinion. This study is aimed at examining the association between Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and IPF using Mendelian randomization (MR).

Method: In our two-sample MR study, we selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are strongly associated with T1D in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) from IEU (dataset: ebi-a-GCST005536) and obtained their corresponding effect estimates on T1D risk in an IPF GWAS from IEU (dataset: finn-b-IPF).

Sociodemographic Factors and Utilization of Pediatric Oncology Satellite Clinics in Ontario, Canada.

Importance: Pediatric cancer care services in high-income nations are mainly centralized in metropolitan cities. To allow treatments closer to home, patients across Ontario, Canada, a geographically large province, are offered decentralized care via satellite clinics; however, it is unclear whether the utilization of these pediatric oncology satellite clinics differs by area-level sociodemographic factors.

Objective: To examine whether sociodemographic factors, such as area-level income and rurality, are independently associated with the odds of satellite clinic visit and the hazards of time to first visit among pediatric oncology patients receiving cancer treatment.

Purpose: In early-stage breast cancer, steatotic liver disease (SLD) is associated with increased recurrence, cardiovascular events, and non-cancer death. Endocrine therapy (ET) increases the risk of SLD. The impact of cyclin-dependent kinases 4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i) on SLD and prognostic association in metastatic breast cancer is unknown.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on breast cancer surgeries in a Canadian population.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted breast cancer (BC) surgeries. Most studies showing reduced BC surgical volumes during the pandemic are from single institutions, few have described volume changes in different types of surgical procedures. This study aimed to assess the impact of the pandemic on BC surgery volumes and types at a population level.

Metabolic regulation of the glioblastoma stem cell epitranscriptome by malate dehydrogenase 2.

Tumors reprogram their metabolism to generate complex neoplastic ecosystems. Here, we demonstrate that glioblastoma (GBM) stem cells (GSCs) display elevated activity of the malate-aspartate shuttle (MAS) and expression of malate dehydrogenase 2 (MDH2). Genetic and pharmacologic targeting of MDH2 attenuated GSC proliferation, self-renewal, and in vivo tumor growth, partially rescued by aspartate.

Proteomic Profiling Identifies Predictive Signatures for Progression Risk in Patients with Advanced-Stage Follicular Lymphoma.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is characterized by an indolent nature and generally favorable prognosis, yet poses a particular clinical challenge, since disease progression is observed in a notable subset of patients. Currently, it is not possible to anticipate which patients will be at risk of progression, highlighting the need for reliable predictive biomarkers that can be detected early in the disease. Objective: We assessed the global distribution and academic, administrative and research outcomes of international fellows (IFs) trained in Canadian gynecologic oncology (GO) programs.

Methods: A web-based survey was sent to IFs who completed GO training in Canada. Using the Web of science database, we identified the publication list, citation record and H-index of IFs and classified them according to their region of practice: high-income countries (HIC), middle income countries (MIC), and low-income countries (LIC).

Global disparities in cancer supportive care: An international survey.

Background: The global cancer burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), highlighting a critical research gap in understanding disparities in supportive care access. To address this, the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Health Disparities Committee initiated a global survey to investigate and delineate these disparities. This study aims to explore and compare supportive care access disparities between LMIC and High-Income Countries (HIC).

Smoking and alcohol by HPV status in head and neck cancer: a Mendelian randomization study.

HPV-positive and HPV-negative head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) are recognized as distinct entities. There remains uncertainty surrounding the causal effects of smoking and alcohol on the development of these two cancer types. Here we perform multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) to evaluate the causal effects of smoking and alcohol on the risk of HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC in 3431 cases and 3469 controls.

Implementing routine collection of EQ-5D-5L in a breast cancer outpatient clinic.

Purpose: A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of implementing routine collection of the Euro-Qol 5 dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaire, to inform drug and health technology reimbursement decision making.

Methods: Women with breast cancer were recruited during scheduled clinic visits to an academic cancer centre. EQ-5D-5L was self-administered using electronic tablets.

The impact of perioperative transfusions on the oncologic outcomes of patients with ovarian cancer: A population-based study.

Objective: Treatment options for recurrent early glottic carcinoma's include conservative and radical surgical options. These options offer similar survival benefits with different impacts of patient's quality of life. We previously present our experience with vertical partial laryngectomy (VPL) and showed high locoregional control rates with high-quality voice results and normal swallowing.

Identification of genetic subtypes in follicular lymphoma.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) exhibits considerable variability in biological features and clinical trajectories across patients. To dissect the diversity of FL, we utilized a Bernoulli mixture model to identify genetic subtypes in 713 pre-treatment tumor tissue samples. Our analysis revealed the existence of five subtypes with unique genetic profiles that correlated with clinicopathological characteristics.

Intramuscular Hemangioma of Lateral Rectus Muscle with Rare Presentation as an Epibulbar Mass: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are essential for healthcare organizations since they allow for the development of programs and initiatives that bring together diverse perspectives and knowledge. Global multidisciplinary organizations, such as the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC), need to understand the perspective of their members regarding EDI to identify opportunities to enhance diversity and inclusiveness and to better meet the needs of members from different backgrounds and resources. The MASCC Health Disparities Committee designed a survey to identify issues related to disparities faced by MASCC members when providing supportive care to patients with cancer and to examine the EDI landscape within the organization.
