Introduction: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are an important imaging marker for cerebral small vessel diseases, but their risk factors and cognitive associations have not been well documented in populations of different ethnicities and/or from different geographical regions.

Methods: We investigated how WMHs were associated with vascular risk factors and cognition in both Whites and Asians, using data from five population-based cohorts of non-demented older individuals from Australia, Singapore, South Korea, and Sweden ( = 1946). WMH volumes (whole brain, periventricular, and deep) were quantified with UBO Detector and harmonized using the ComBat model.

Airway complications post lung transplant including ischaemia and dehiscence have a significant associated mortality (2%-4%) and morbidity. We describe a case of a 22-year-old female who developed significant bilateral anastomotic dehiscence with severe ischaemia following a bilateral single sequential lung transplant (BSSLTx). Following an intensive antimicrobial regimen, judicious bronchoscopic surveillance, and a prolonged inpatient stay, the dehiscence resolved without requiring further surgical intervention.

Aortic valve stenosis is the most common valvular lesion in Australia, with a rising prevalence in line with the ageing population. Recent trials have demonstrated the efficacy of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) versus surgical aortic valve replacement in consecutively lower surgical risk patient cohorts. Despite this, the current indication for TAVI in Australia is for the treatment of severe symptomatic aortic stenosis in patients who are of prohibitive or high surgical risk and ultimately deemed suitable by a heart team.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) significantly impairs renal function, leading to a decline in kidney performance that may not fully recover after an episode.
  • An ovine study revealed that even after 25 days post-ADHF recovery, certain kidney function indicators like creatinine clearance remained decreased, suggesting lasting kidney damage.
  • Gene expression analysis indicated that inflammatory pathways and changes in numerous genes play a crucial role in both the onset and recovery phases of kidney injury related to ADHF.

August 2016

Inflammation and Infection Research, School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW Australia, NSW, Australia.

Rationale: Granulomas in sarcoidosis have recently been described as containing Interleukin (IL)-27, one of the members of the IL-12 family of cytokines, which also includes IL-35. Levels of these cytokines and the IL-27 receptor subunits were hypothesised to differ between patients with sarcoidosis compared to healthy controls in peripheral blood.

Methods: Using a cross-sectional study design, plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were collected from patients and control subjects.
