The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens necessitates the urgent development of new antimicrobial agents with innovative modes of action for the next generation of antimicrobial therapy. Bacterial transcription has been identified and widely studied as a viable target for antimicrobial development. The main focus of these studies has been the discovery of inhibitors that bind directly to the core enzyme of RNA polymerase (RNAP).

Background: Personalized blood pressure (BP) management for patients with acute ischemic stroke after successful endovascular thrombectomy lacks evidence. We aimed to investigate whether the deviation of BP from cerebral autoregulation limits is associated with worse outcomes.
Methods And Results: We determined autoregulation by measuring mean velocity index and calculated the percentage of time and the burden (defined as the time-BP area) with BP outside the autoregulatory limits of each subject within 48 hours after endovascular thrombectomy.

Background: Exercise-based swallowing training (EBST) and transcutaneous neuromuscular electrical stimulation (TNMES) are common modalities used to treat late dysphagia after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We aimed to investigate and compare the efficacies of EBST and TNMES as proactive treatments administered early after radiotherapy.
Methods: Patients with early post-radiotherapy NPC ( = 120) underwent either TNMES or EBST.

The high mortality rate of patients with diabetic foot ulcers is urging the appearance of an effective biomedical drug. Senescence is one of the major reasons of aging-induced decline in the diabetic wound. Our previous studies have demonstrated the anti-senescence effect of secretomes derived from human fetal mesenchymal stem cells (hfMSC).

Purpose: To translate and culturally adapt the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS) to Chinese version, and to psychometrically test it in stroke population.
Methods: This study consisted of 2 phases. In phase one, we translated and culturally adopted the original English version of MFIS into Chinese (Cantonese) (MFIS-C).

Background: Recent findings of clinical studies have demonstrated a significant positive relationship between Fugl-Meyer Assessment of upper extremity score and the action research arm test (ARAT) score in people with stroke. Although the motor activity log (MAL) can assess the self-perception of motor performance, which can affect the performance of the upper limb, the relationship between MAL score and ARAT score still remains unclear. The objective of this study is to quantify the independent contribution of MAL score and FMA-hand score on the ARAT score in people with stroke.

Background: Social support is important for stroke rehabilitation. Conventionally, social support is evaluated from the level of support received. However, the bidirectional support hypothesis postulated that self-perceived social support is optimized if individuals provide and receive social support in a balanced manner.

The mechanism of extracellular ligand nano-geometry in ex vivo T cell activation for immunotherapy remains elusive. Herein, the authors demonstrate large aspect ratio (AR) of gold nanorods (AuNRs) conjugated on cell culture substrate enhancing both murine and human T cell activation through the nanoscale anisotropic presentation of stimulatory ligands (anti-CD3(αCD3) and anti-CD28(αCD28) antibodies). AuNRs with large AR bearing αCD3 and αCD28 antibodies significantly promote T cell expansion and key cytokine secretion including interleukin-2 (IL-2), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α).

Objective: To demonstrate that oro-pharyngo-esophageal radionuclide scintigraphy (OPERS) not only detects tracheobronchial aspiration after swallowing, but also quantifies the amount of aspiration and subsequent clearance.
Methods: Data collected between 2014 and 2019 were reviewed for aspiration pneumonia at 12 and 24-months after OPERS. The predictive value for aspiration pneumonia on flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS), and OPERS, and the overall survival of patients with or without aspiration were determined.

Patients with diabetes have increased risk of cancer and poor response to anti-cancer treatment. Increased protein synthesis is associated with endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress which can trigger the unfolded protein response (UPR) to restore homeostasis, failure of which can lead to dysregulated cellular growth. We hypothesize that hyperglycemia may have legacy effect in promoting survival of cancer cells through dysregulation of UPR.

We report a case of pulmonary embolism in a patient who presented with repeated anxiety attacks and psychotic symptoms and was misdiagnosed as having withdrawal seizure or anxiety disorder not otherwise specified. This case highlighted the nonspecific clinical features of pulmonary embolism and the principles in making psychiatric diagnosis. Careful history taking, thorough physical examination, appropriate investigation, and a high index of suspicion led to the correct diagnosis.

: Prevalence of food allergy is rising in different regions of the world. Asia has not been spared from this epidemic, but epidemiological data have revealed a different pattern of food allergens in this continent. Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) for food allergy, which has been revolutionary as the main focus of research in recent years, needs to be adapted for the different populations in Asia.

It is extremely difficult to discriminate between follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) and follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA) before surgery, because the morphologies of carcinoma cells and adenoma cells obtained by fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) are similar. Molecular markers may be helpful on this issue. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of GPER1, EGFR and CXCR1 in differential diagnosis between FTC and FTA.

Clinical and epidemiological studies have shown that estrogen may be involved in the development and progression of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER1) is a novel seven-transmembrane estrogen receptor that functions alongside traditional nuclear estrogen receptors (ERs) to regulate the cellular responses to estrogen. The purpose of this study was to examine GPER1, EGFR and CXCR1 expression in PTC and to assess the association of their expression with clinicopathological indicators.

Background: Noncontinuous antidepressant use is frequently observed in clinical practice despite the standard recommendation of at least 6-9 months of continuous treatment. The problem may be more serious in Chinese populations where stigmatization is common. This retrospective cohort study investigated the rate of noncontinuous antidepressant use and subsequent rate of relapse and recurrence in psychiatric Chinese outpatients by examining the prescription records, electronic medical records, and written medical records.

Hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is upregulated by hypoxia, and involved in tumor growth and metastasis in many malignant tumors including papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Metallothionein (MT) is a group of small molecular weight cysteine-rich proteins with a broad variety of functions. SLUG is a member of SNAIL superfamily of zinc finger transcriptional factors implicated in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).
