Background: Removal of the metaphyseal screw from tension band plate constructs after correction of angular deformity in patients treated with hemiepiphysiodesis has been suggested as an alternative to removing the plate and both screws. While this has the potential benefit of easier implant removal and reinsertion in the event of rebound, there is debate in the literature regarding the benefits and risks of leaving the epiphyseal screw and plate in place.

Methods: Patients treated with hemiepiphysiodesis at the distal femur and/or proximal tibia with tension band plates and screws who underwent subsequent removal of the metaphyseal screw after correction were included.

  • Intravenous lipids are important for very premature babies to get the nutrition they need safely.
  • The study compared two kinds of intravenous fats: one made with fish oil (CO-ILE) and another made with only soybean oil (SOLE), to see which was better for babies needing long-term nutrition.
  • Results showed that CO-ILE had a lower chance of causing liver problems and less yellowing of the skin compared to SOLE, suggesting CO-ILE might be a safer choice for these babies.

Pediatr Rev

October 2024

Division of Hospital Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Seattle Children's Hospital, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's Research Institute, Center for Clinical and Translational Research, Seattle, WA.

Article Synopsis
  • Brief resolved unexplained events (BRUEs) are common in infants under 1 year, characterized by being asymptomatic with no clear diagnosis; less than 5% are linked to serious conditions.
  • Despite the low risk of serious issues, about 63% of BRUE cases lead to hospitalization, and up to 82% result in diagnostic testing, often leading to false positives.
  • Effective management of BRUE requires balancing reassurance for anxious parents while explaining risks versus benefits of tests, with a family-centered approach to decision-making that respects caregivers' values.

Purpose: Brentuximab vedotin (BV) incorporation into frontline chemotherapy regimens improved outcomes for classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL). The shared mechanism of action of BV and vinca alkaloids as microtubulin inhibitors increased the potential risk of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Rates of CIPN and use of protocol-stipulated dose modifications of a microtubulin inhibitor were examined on the Children's Oncology Group AHOD1331 study, which compared BV, doxorubicin, vincristine (VCR), etoposide, prednisone, cyclophosphamide (BV-AVE-PC; BV arm) with bleomycin containing doxorubicin, bleomycin, vincristine, etoposide, prednisone, cyclophosphamide (ABVE-PC; standard arm) in patients with high-risk cHL ages 2-21 years.
