Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the effectiveness of nucleotide MALDI-TOF MS for diagnosing rifampicin resistance in drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) compared to the Xpert MTB/RIF method, revealing that MALDI-TOF MS had better performance metrics like sensitivity and accuracy.
  • - Conducted at Qingdao Chest Hospital, the research involved a retrospective analysis of 125 DR-TB patients, where results were validated using various testing methods including phenotypic drug susceptibility testing and Sanger sequencing.
  • - Findings indicated that certain factors, like chest pain and sensitivities to other TB drugs, were significantly associated with rifampicin resistance among the patients, highlighting potential areas for further investigation and treatment strategies in DR-TB management.

Lifestyle Medicine (LM) is a rapidly growing discipline that focuses on the role of lifestyle factors in preventing, managing, and reversing chronic disease. At this point in the field's evolution, there is strong evidence that the 6 pillars of LM-a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and positive social connections-are central in the creation and maintenance of health. Previous publications, many of them randomized controlled studies and meta-analyses, have solidified the evidence base for the use of the 6 pillars within the field of LM.

Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation Attenuates the Gender Gap in Cardiac Rehabilitation Participation.

Curr Probl Cardiol

June 2023

Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Providence, RI; Alpert Medical School, Brown University, Providence, RI.

Traditional cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs historically have had considerable gender gaps in CR outcomes. Intensive-Cardiac-Rehabilitation (ICR) has nonexercise components such as stress management, peer support and diet modification, in addition to exercise, which may reduce barriers to CR completion. However, there is a paucity of data in ICR outcomes based on gender.

April 2021

Lifespan Cardiovascular Institute, and Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, Brown University, Alpert Medical School, Providence, Rhode Island. Electronic address:

The secondary prevention (SP) of coronary heart disease (CHD) has become a major public health and economic burden worldwide. In the United States, the prevalence of CHD has risen to 18 million, the incidence of recurrent myocardial infarctions (MI) remains high, and related healthcare costs are projected to double by 2035. In the last decade, practice guidelines and performance measures for the SP of CHD have increasingly emphasized evidence-based lifestyle (LS) interventions, including healthy dietary patterns, regular exercise, smoking cessation, weight management, depression screening, and enrollment in cardiac rehabilitation.
