Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), a potent neurotrophic factor, has been shown to affect cancer cell metastasis and invasion. Objectives: Given the uncertainty regarding the relationship of C-reactive protein (CRP) and homocysteine (Hcy) to atherosclerotic burden, our aim was to determine whether CRP and Hcy are related to the presence of subclinical coronary plaque and stenosis.

Methods: We did a cross-sectional analysis of data gathered on 1248 consecutive, newly self-referred, middle-aged subjects who underwent health check ups at China Medical University Hospital. Participants had at least one cardiac risk factor, but no known coronary heart disease.

Ultrasonic detection of atherosclerotic plaque of carotid abdominal aortic and femoral arteries and evaluation of risk factors were performed in 208 hypercholesterolemic men without cardiovascular disease. Twenty-six percent of them had no plaque. Plaque at the carotid, aortic, and femoral sites was found in 37%, 48%, and 53% of subjects, respectively.

As a 31-year-old surgeon, with special interest in vascular disease, Korotkoff discovered the sounds of the blood pressure in 1905 while working on his doctoral thesis. After publication of the latter, he wrote nothing further about his remarkable discovery. As is often the case, others picked up on it, however, and the technique of measuring arterial blood pressure changed from one of touch to one of hearing.

Sixteen elite women runners and 14 good women runners underwent medical history and physical examinations. Resting ECGs were recorded in all and exercise ECGs in 28 of the 30 (two were injured). Women in both groups combined endurance with supplemental strength and flexibility workouts.
