Lifestyle dietary interventions are an essential practice in treating obesity, hence neural factors that may assist in predicting individual treatment success are of great significance. Here, in a prospective, open-label, three arms study, we examined the correlation between brain resting-state functional connectivity measured at baseline and weight loss following 6 months of lifestyle intervention in 92 overweight participants. We report a robust subnetwork composed mainly of sensory and motor cortical regions, whose edges correlated with future weight loss.

Background: To describe ocular injuries sustained by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers during low-intensity conflicts from 1998 to 2017, and to evaluate the use of protective eyewear.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of data retrieved from two tertiary Israeli medical centers and the military trauma registry. The analysis included all IDF soldiers with ocular injuries who were referred to these centers between 1998 and 2017.

Situated at the crossroads of Africa and Eurasia, the Levant is a crucial region for understanding the origins and spread of Upper Paleolithic (UP) traditions associated with the spread of modern humans. Of the two local Early Upper Paleolithic technocomplexes, the Ahmarian and the Levantine Aurignacian, the latter appears to be unique in the endemic UP sequence, exhibiting greater similarity to the West European 'classic' Aurignacian than to the local preceding and proceeding UP entities. Previous publications have mostly focused on the similarities between the two lithic industries and less on studies conducted on Levantine Aurignacian bone tools and ornaments.

One fundamental character common to pancrustaceans (Crustacea and Hexapoda) is a mineralized rigid exoskeleton whose principal organic components are chitin and proteins. In contrast to traditional research in the field that has been devoted to the structural and physicochemical aspects of biomineralization, the present study explores transcriptomic aspects of biomineralization as a first step towards adding a complementary molecular layer to this field. The rigidity of the exoskeleton in pancrustaceans dictates essential molt cycles enabling morphological changes and growth.

Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) is a rare life-threatening condition affecting the autonomic nervous system that usually presents shortly after birth as hypoventilation or central apnea during sleep. In the majority of cases, heterozygous polyalanine expansion mutations within the third exon of the paired-like homeobox 2B (PHOX2B) gene underlie CCHS. Here, we report the generation of two induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines from two identical twins with a heterozygous PHOX2B expansion mutation (+5 alanine residues).

We use Langevin dynamics simulations to study the mass diffusion problem across two adjacent porous layers of different transport properties. At the interface between the layers, we impose the Kedem-Katchalsky (KK) interfacial boundary condition that is well suited in a general situation. AmyloLipid nanovesicles (ALNs) are new lipid-modified starch complex nanoparticles developed and presented as nanocarriers of curcumin for targeting the CNS via the intranasal route. Curcumin has been indicated as a promising active agent with a variety of pharmacological activities, including a potential ability to treat brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, and CNS disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, as it may inhibit amyloid-β-protein (Aβ) aggregation and Aβ-induced inflammation. Although curcumin has a tremendous potential as a therapeutic agent for CNS disorders, its low bioavailability and its rapid total body clearance reduce any chance for therapeutic levels to reach the brain.

Environmental factors that drive vegetation change in the Three River Headwater Region (TRHR) on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau are largely unknown. Background: Ileocolic intussusception is a common abdominal emergency in children, diagnosed routinely with ultrasound and treated most frequently with fluoroscopic pneumatic reduction without sedation. Alternatively, ultrasound can also be used to obviate ionizing radiation and sedation can be used to avoid discomfort from the procedure. Various material-strengthening strategies have evolved in the cuticle and the feeding tools of arthropods. Of particular interest is the crustacean mandible, which is frequently reinforced with calcium phosphate, giving a minerology similar to that of human bones and teeth. Primarily known as an elastase inhibitor, human alpha1-antitrypsin also exerts anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, both in vitro and in vivo. While the anti-protease mechanism of alpha1-antitrypsin is attributed to a particular protein domain coined the reactive center loop, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory loci within the molecule remain to be identified. In the present study, directed evolution and back-to-consensus algorithms were applied to human alpha1-antitrypsin.

Patients with preserved left ventricular (LV) ejection function (EF) and atrioventricular block (AVB) who are anticipated for high-burden of right ventricular (RV) pacing possess a risk to develop pacing-induced cardiomyopathy (PIC) and adverse clinical outcomes. Hence, the aim of the study is to evaluate the incidence, predictors, and clinical outcomes of RV PIC in patients with preserved LVEF, AVB, and high-burden of RV pacing. One thousand and thirteen patients with second or third-degree AVB underwent first time pacemaker implantation between January 2002 and August 2016.

Nodding Syndrome (NS) is a fatal pediatric epilepsy of unknown etiology, accompanied by multiple neurological impairments, and associated with Onchocerca volvulus (Ov), malnutrition, war-induced trauma, and other insults. NS patients have neuroinflammation, and ~50% have cross-reactive Ov/Leiomodin-1 neurotoxic autoimmune antibodies. RESULTS: Studying 30 South Sudanese NS patients and a similar number of healthy subjects from the same geographical region, revealed autoimmune antibodies to 3 extracellular peptides of ionotropic glutamate receptors in NS patients: AMPA-GluR3B peptide antibodies (86%), NMDA-NR1 peptide antibodies (77%) and NMDA-NR2 peptide antibodies (87%) (in either 1:10, 1:100 or 1:1000 serum dilution).

Light driven degradation is very promising for pollutants remediation. In the present work, photochemical reaction of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) under LED white light (λ > 400 nm) irradiation system was investigated to figure out the TBBPA photochemical degradation pathways and isotope fractionation patterns associated with transformation mechanisms.
