Increased inhibition following negative cues: A possible role for enhanced processing.

Cortex

January 2020

Department of Psychology, University of Haifa, Israel; The Institute of Information Processing and Decision Making (IIPDM), University of Haifa, Israel. Electronic address:

Based on findings showing that attention is captured by aversive stimuli, previous studies have hypothesized that inhibition of return (IOR) is reduced at spatial locations previously occupied by threat cues. Yet evidence for this view is limited: Only a few studies have demonstrated a reduced degree of IOR following threat cues, while most have not found differences in IOR between aversive and neutral cues. In contrast to previous studies that used the spatial cuing paradigm and for the most part employed mild negative stimuli as cues, we examined the influence of highly aversive, colored and complex pictures of real life situations.

On the form and bio-mechanics of venom-injection elements.

Acta Biomater

February 2019

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva 84105, Israel. Electronic address:

A wide variety of animals-from insects to snakes-crucially depend on their ability to inject venom into their target, be it their prey or their predator. To effectively deliver their venom, venomous animals use a specialized biomechanical element whose tip must penetrate through the integument of the target. During this process, the tip of the venom-injection element (VIE) is subject to local forces, which may deform it and cause considerable structural damage to the VIE, with devastating consequences for the survival of the animal or, in the case of eusocial insects, to the colony.

Over-learned semantic representations, such as numbers, are strongly associated with space in normal cognition, and in the phenomenon called number-space synaesthesia. In number-space synaesthesia, numbers are linked to spatial locations in an idiosyncratic way. Synaesthetes report numbers as belonging to a specific location, or feelings that a specific location is the right location for that number.

Vision for action and vision for perception both rely on shape representations derived within the visual system. Whether the same psychological and neural mechanisms underlie both forms of behavior remains hotly contested, and whether this arrangement is equivalent in adults and children is controversial as well. To address these outstanding questions, we used an established psychophysical heuristic, Weber's law, which, in adults, has typically been observed for perceptual judgment tasks but not for actions such as grasping.

Hematopathology Service, Pathology Department, Soroka Univ. Med. Ctr. and Faculty of Health Sciences, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel.

A query regarding the definition and the classification of solitary plasmacytoma is apparently still pending. The clinical course, the response to treatment and the propensity to progress to plasma cell myeloma, are all a function of the classification which must be established on a firm basis. Solitary plasmacytoma should be recognized in the continuum of the plasma cell neoplasms.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles phytotoxicity on halophyte from genus Salicornia.

Plant Physiol Biochem

September 2018

Plant Stress Laboratory, French Associates Institute for Agriculture and Biotechnology of Drylands, Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Sede Boqer Campus, 84990, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines how zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) affect the growth of Salicornia, a type of halophyte, showing that higher concentrations (1000 mg/L) can reduce shoot length by over 50% compared to untreated plants.
  • The negative impact on plant growth is linked to the release of free zinc(II) ions and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which alter antioxidant enzyme activities and cause lipid peroxidation.
  • Ultimately, excessive ROS and zinc imbalances trigger oxidative stress, leading to programmed cell death, indicating that even stress-resistant halophytes can suffer from ZnO NPs exposure.
