Microglia play a key role in innate immunity in Alzheimer disease (AD), but their role as antigen-presenting cells is as yet unclear. Here we found that amyloid β peptide (Aβ)-specific T helper 1 (Aβ-Th1 cells) T cells polarized to secrete interferon-γ and intracerebroventricularly (ICV) injected to the 5XFAD mouse model of AD induced the differentiation of major histocompatibility complex class II (MHCII)+ microglia with distinct morphology and enhanced plaque clearance capacity than MHCII- microglia. Notably, 5XFAD mice lacking MHCII exhibited an enhanced amyloid pathology in the brain along with exacerbated innate inflammation and reduced phagocytic capacity.

Protein kinase C (PKC)-interacting cousin of thioredoxin (PICOT; also termed glutaredoxin 3 (Glrx3)) is a ubiquitously expressed protein that possesses an N-terminal monothiol thioredoxin (Trx) domain and two C-terminal tandem copies of a monothiol Glrx domain. It has an overall highly conserved amino acid sequence and is encoded by a unique gene, both in humans and mice, without having other functional gene homologs in the entire genome. Despite being discovered almost two decades ago, the biological function of PICOT remains largely ill-defined and its ramifications are underestimated considering the fact that PICOT-deficiency in mice results in embryonic lethality.

A karst survey of the western upper Galilee in Israel shows that karst has been a dominant geomorphic factor throughout the Cenozoic. We discuss the geomorphic character of Manot Cave on the background of other karst features of the region, in order to decipher the preferences of the humans who favored this cave over others. Tens of caves distributed over the study area demonstrate that phreatic and hypogene isolated voids and conduit segments are more abundant than vadose shafts, sinking stream caves and spring caves, although all these types are present.

We have been studying simple prebiotic catalytic replicating networks as prototypes for modeling replication, complexification and Systems Chemistry. While living systems are always open and function far from equilibrium, these prebiotic networks may be open or closed, dynamic or static, divergent or convergent to a steady state. In this paper we review the properties of these simple replicating networks, and show, via four working models, how even though closed systems exhibit a wide range of emergent phenomena, many of the more interesting phenomena leading to complexification and emergence indeed require open systems.

We present a framework for along-tract analysis of white matter (WM) fiber bundles based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tractography. We introduce the novel concept of fiber-flux density for modeling fiber tracts' geometry, and combine it with diffusion-based measures to define vector descriptors called Fiber-Flux Diffusion Density (FFDD). The proposed model captures informative features of WM tracts at both the microscopic (diffusion-related) and macroscopic (geometry-related) scales, thus enabling improved sensitivity to subtle structural abnormalities that are not reflected by either diffusion or geometrical properties alone.

Background & Aim: It is unclear if a reduction in hepatic fat content (HFC) is a major mediator of the cardiometabolic benefit of lifestyle intervention, and whether it has prognostic significance beyond the loss of visceral adipose tissue (VAT). In the present sub-study, we hypothesized that HFC loss in response to dietary interventions induces specific beneficial effects independently of VAT changes.

Successful gene therapy requires the development of suitable carriers for the selective and efficient delivery of genes to specific target cells, with minimal toxicity. In this work, we present a non-viral vector for gene delivery composed of biocompatible materials, CaCl, plasmid DNA and the semi-synthetic anionic biopolymer alginate sulfate (AlgS), which spontaneously co-assembled to form nanoparticles (NPs). The NPs were characterized with a slightly anionic surface charge (Zeta potential [ζ] = -14 mV), an average size of 270 nm, and their suspension was stable for several days with no aggregation.

Implementing ovarian tissue engineering for the maturation of primordial follicles, the most abundant follicle population in the ovary, holds great potential for women fertility preservation. Here, we evaluated whether macroporous alginate scaffolds with affinity-bound bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP-4) could mimic the ovary microenvironment and support the culture and growth of primordial follicles seeded with supporting ovarian cells. Porcine primordial follicles developed in the alginate scaffolds up to the pre-antral stage within 21 days.

The efforts to develop structural materials for biodegradable metal implants have lately shifted their focus from Magnesium and Iron base alloys towards Zinc. This was mainly due to the accelerated corrosion rate of Mg that is accompanied by hydrogen gas evolution, formation of voluminous iron oxide products with reduced degradation rate in the case of Iron implants and the crucial role of Zn in many physiological processes.
