Background: BK virus nephropathy (BKVN) is a frequent and serious post-transplant complication and undermines realization of the full benefits of kidney transplantation. We developed a Bak amplicon-based standard curve for absolute quantification of BKV VP1 mRNA copy number in the real time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) assay and investigated the performance characteristics of this novel assay.

Methods: We determined analytical specificity, sensitivity, and precision of our 73 bp mouse Bak amplicon based standard curve for absolute quantification of BKV VP1 mRNA in RT-qPCR assays.

Per the American Society for Apheresis, therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a Category III indication in the management of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). This nationally representative study evaluates TPE utilization in hospitalized adults with a primary admission diagnosis of ITP. Hospitalizations with ITP as the primary admitting diagnosis were analyzed from the 2010 to 2014 National Inpatient Sample, the largest all-payer inpatient database in the United States.

Computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous biopsy of deep-seated head and neck lesions can be a less invasive and equally effective alternative to surgical techniques. There are multiple approaches for needle biopsy that target varying spaces within the head and neck while successfully avoiding critical anatomy. In the paramaxillary approach, the needle is advanced through the infrazygomatic buccal space, in between the maxilla and mandible.

Objective: Telemedicine technology has been developed to allow surgeons in countries with limited resources to access expert technical guidance during surgical procedures. The authors report their initial experience using state-of-the-art wearable smart glasses with wireless capability to transmit intraoperative video content during spine surgery from sub-Saharan Africa to experts in the US.

Methods: A novel smart glasses system with integrated camera and microphone was worn by a spine surgeon in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, during 3 scoliosis correction surgeries.

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of grandmother and mother educational attainment on low birth weight (LBW) in children and grandchildren.

Methods: The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health is a multigenerational study that collected survey data from 1994 to 2018. Using this database, we constructed a cohort of 2867 non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and non-Hispanic White (NHW) grandmother-mother-grandchild triads to evaluate how education affects the likelihood of having LBW children and grandchildren, while adjusting for socioeconomic and maternal health factors using multivariable logistic regression.

Background: Disk herniations that obstruct the spinal canal by more than 50% are named "giant disk herniations" (GDHs). GDHs are challenging to treat from a surgical perspective because of their size and the risk of iatrogenic manipulation during resection resulting in additional neurological compromise. The COVID-19 pandemic limited pre-clinical medical students from participating in traditional clinical in-person shadowing. Rather than eliminating clinical shadowing from an established leadership course, we describe the experience of six pre-clinical medical students shadowing physician preceptors remotely through virtual platforms. Six pre-clinical medical students enrolled in 2020's Weill Cornell Medicine's Healthcare Leadership and Management Scholars Program were prepared with training materials for on-camera patient care.
