There is little question that precision medicine will eventually be the standard of care in treatment with algorithms designed for therapy selection and is already being used in some specialties such as cystic fibrosis and multiple cancer treatments. A framework for treatment within the interdisciplinary team with more defined roles and areas of specialty will need to be in place as this practice approach expands with new data and treatments.

Background And Purpose: Teaching and learning the spectrum of activity (SOA) of antimicrobial agents can be a challenge in pharmacy education. While there are clinical decision support tools to assist clinicians in medication management, pharmacogenetic testing to identify potential drug-gene or drug-drug-gene interactions is not widely implemented in the clinical setting. A PRISMA-compliant scoping review was performed to determine if pharmacogenetic testing for absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME)-related genetic variants is associated with improved clinical outcomes in patients with polypharmacy.

Neuroprotective Natural Products for Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the number one neurovegetative disease, but its treatment options are relatively few and ineffective. In efforts to discover new strategies for AD therapy, natural products have aroused interest in the research community and in the pharmaceutical industry for their neuroprotective activity, targeting different pathological mechanisms associated with AD. A wide variety of natural products from different origins have been evaluated preclinically and clinically for their neuroprotective mechanisms in preventing and attenuating the multifactorial pathologies of AD.

The use of the ketogenic diet in the treatment of psychiatric disorders.

Introduction: The ketogenic diet (KD) is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, and moderate-protein diet that has shown benefit as a treatment in neurologic disorders and may serve as a therapeutic option in individuals with psychiatric disorders.

Methods: A search was conducted using EBSCOhost and PubMed databases for studies relating to ketogenic or low-carbohydrate diets and psychiatric disorders.

Results: A total of 32 experimental or observational studies were identified by initial search strategies, 14 of which met the criteria to be included in this analysis.

Effects of narcissism in essential workers during COVID-19.

We studied essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that trait narcissists would communicate more about their work during the pandemic because their work elevated their status to "hero" and provided an opportunity to shine. We found evidence of this for grandiose, but not vulnerable narcissism.

This study aimed to examine factors, healthcare utilization, and medical costs associated with potentially inappropriate use of benzodiazepines in persons living with HIV (PLWH). We used big data from Medicare claims in 2017. Potentially inappropriate use of benzodiazepines was defined as having any benzodiazepine claims in individuals 65+ years or having benzodiazepine claims for more than four weeks in individuals 18-64 years.

After screening titles, abstracts, and/or the full text of the 415 articles identified in an initial search, 71 articles involving personality frameworks were included in the study. Several different personality frameworks, including the Five-Factor Model, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Rational Experiential Inventory, and the CliftonStrengths assessment, were used in various health science education disciplines, including medicine, nursing, and pharmacy.

Effect of Vancomycin-Associated Acute Kidney Injury on Incidence of 30-Day Readmissions among Hospitalized Veterans Affairs Patients with Skin and Skin Structure Infections.

Among hospitalized adults who received vancomycin for their skin and skin structure infection (SSSI), patients who experienced acute kidney injury (AKI) had considerably higher 30-day readmission rates. Nearly half of the observed 30-day readmissions were due to non-SSSI-related reasons, which is consistent with the persistent organ dysfunction observed among patients with AKI.

Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is a ubiquitous signal transduction regulator, and Hsp90 inhibitors are in clinical development as cancer therapeutics. However, there have been very few studies on the impact of Hsp90 inhibitors on pain or analgesia, a serious concern for cancer patients. We previously found that Hsp90 inhibitors injected into the brain block opioid-induced antinociception in tail flick, paw incision, and HIV neuropathy pain.

A Paradigm Shift in US Experiential Pharmacy Education Accelerated by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The coronavirus identified in 2019 (COVID-19) has caused dramatic disruptions in pharmacy experiential education. Administrators and programs have worked to help external preceptors, faculty members, and students cope with the new realities of virtual or remote experiences and new or increased use of telemedicine. Clear and effective lines of communication as well as well-reasoned and resourced alternative plans are necessary to help manage the current issues and prepare for future challenges.
