Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Recent Update on Pathophysiology and Treatment.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a major long-lasting side effect of some chemotherapy drugs, which threatens cancer survival rate. CIPN mostly affects sensory neurons and occasionally motor neurons, causing numbness, tingling, discomfort, and burning pain in the upper and lower extremities. The pathophysiology of CIPN is not completely understood; however, it is believed that chemotherapies induce peripheral neuropathy via directly damaging mitochondria, impairing the function of ion channels, triggering immunological mechanisms, and disrupting microtubules.

A Snapshot of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience Program Characteristics.

Objective: To provide schools and colleges of pharmacy a snapshot of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) program characteristics to generate and share ideas for IPPE program modifications to improve student learning outcomes and comply with Standards 2025.

Methods: A 41-item electronic survey was distributed to 140 Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education fully accredited schools and colleges of pharmacy in 2023. IPPE program characteristics such as structure, learning activities, assessments, and requirements were described.

Experimental measurements of the granular density of modes via impact.

The jamming transition is an important feature of granular materials, with prior work showing an excess of low-frequency modes in the granular analog to the density of states, the granular density of modes. In this work, we present an experimental method for acoustically measuring the granular density of modes using a single impact event to excite vibrational modes in an experimental, three-dimensional, granular material. We test three different granular materials, all of which are composed of spherical beads.

Impact of an enteral nutrition protocol in critically ill patients with burn injuries.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to characterize the University of Florida (UF) Health Shands Burn Centers enteral nutrition protocol as it relates to total protein intake and clinical outcomes.

Methods: This retrospective chart review study included 99 adult patients admitted to the UF Health Shands Burn Center from January 2012 through August 2016 with burns of twenty percent or greater TBSA and required enteral nutrition supplementation.

They are involved in modulating the folding, maturation, and activation of their client proteins to regulate numerous intracellular signaling pathways. Previous studies demonstrated that pan-Hsp90 inhibitors reduce inflammatory signaling pathways resulting in a reduction of inflammation and pain but show toxicities in cancer-related clinical trials.

Effect of low- versus high-dose 4-factor prothrombin complex concentrate in factor Xa inhibitor-associated bleeding: A qualitative systematic review.

Purpose: The purpose of this review is to evaluate current literature on the treatment of factor Xa inhibitor-associated bleeds with 4-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4F-PCC), with a focus on the effect of low versus high dosing of 4F-PCC on hemostatic efficacy and safety outcomes.

Summary: A search of PubMed and EBSCOhost was performed to identify studies evaluating patients with a factor Xa inhibitor-bleed treated with 4F-PCC at either low or high doses. Studies of patients receiving alternative reversal agents such as fresh frozen plasma and andexanet alfa or where no comparator group was evaluated were excluded from the analysis.

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor CHRNA5 is overexpressed in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients with a recent tobacco smoking history.

Tobacco smoking is a major driver of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) occurrence, and previous studies have shed light on the precise molecular alterations in tobacco-related HNSCCs when compared to HNSCCs associated with other risk factors (ex: human papillomavirus/HPV status). In this study, we analyzed the gene expression differences in HNSCC cases with a recent smoking history and revealed that the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor CHRNA5 is differentially overexpressed in smoking-related HNSCCs. CHRNA5 overexpression in these HNSCCs corresponds with a worse prognosis and is inversely correlated with an immune expression signature commonly associated with better prognosis.

Augmented renal clearance (ARC) is a phenomenon observed in critically ill patients, leading to supraphysiologic drug clearance and concern for suboptimal antibiotic concentrations. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of our institutional protocolized antibiotic dosing regimen in critically ill patients with bacteremia and ARC compared with critically ill patients without ARC. We performed a retrospective study comparing the efficacy of an institutional protocolized antibiotic dosing regimen in critically ill patients with bacteremia and ARC compared with critically ill patients without ARC.

The State of Pharmacoeconomics Education in the Doctor of Pharmacy Curriculum amid the Changing Face of Pharmacy Practice.

(1) Background: Continuous growth in pharmaceutical expenditure indicates the need for more advanced pharmacoeconomics evaluations to optimize healthcare outcomes and resource allocation. This study assesses the extent to which accredited pharmacy colleges in the United States cover pharmacoeconomics content within the didactic curriculum of their Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs. (2) Methods: We conducted a systematic search of the websites of accredited professional-degree programs in pharmacy schools located in the United States to identify pertinent content related to pharmacoeconomics.

Impact of COVID-19 on Pharmacy Education and Practice: Strategies to Boost Advocacy and Unity among Health Care Organizations.

The global COVID-19 pandemic impacted pharmacy education and changed the pharmacists' scope of practice at the federal and state levels. Based on the Amended Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act, pharmacists were authorized to provide essential services, including testing, treatments, and immunizations at various practice settings. Specifically, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued emergency use authorization for several medications, vaccines, and medical devices.

Background: Living in hilly neighbourhoods can be associated with sedentary behaviour, but no study has compared sedentary behaviour and its associations with frailty, chronic diseases, and poor health between flat and hilly neighbourhoods among older adults. This study, therefore, compared older adults' sedentary behaviour and its association with frailty, poor health, and chronic disease status between low and hilly neighbourhoods.

Methods: This study utilised a STROBE-compliant cross-sectional design with sensitivity analyses and a common methods bias assessment.

Background: Intellectual disability (ID) involves impairment of general mental abilities, restricting the participation of individuals in conceptual, social and practical activities. Consequently, rehabilitation services are critical in efforts towards promoting the social and educational inclusion of persons with ID. However, the preparedness of health professionals in performing such a role depends on their perceptions of individuals with ID.

College of education students' attitude towards the use of online information dissemination tools for counseling in Ghana.

Online counseling is widely regarded as a cost-effective and convenient means to provide basic counseling services, and it is increasingly being used in university treatment. However, it is unclear what amount of information and attitude students have about online counseling in colleges of education. This study looked at students' views toward and likelihood of using online counseling towards help information seeking and dissemination to see if it has the potential to increase overall service consumption.

Assessing the pharmacy students' knowledge of genetic counseling with genetic variants that are associated with inherited disease.

Background And Purpose: To assess pharmacy students' understanding of the importance of genetic counseling through a didactic lecture and active in-class learning exercise in a required pharmacogenomics course.

Educational Activity And Setting: During the second year, students are enrolled in a two-credit hour pharmacogenomics course which is taught by multiple faculty members from various disciplines. The pharmacy students were taught the clinical importance of genetic results and counseling patients on their individualized reports by a clinical laboratory geneticist and a clinical genetic counselor.

Areas Covered: Members of the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists Pharmacy Community of Interest were selected to review articles published in prominent peer-reviewed journals in 2020 that most impacted diabetes pharmacotherapy and technology. A list of 37 nominated articles were compiled (22 in diabetes pharmacotherapy and 15 in diabetes technology).

Associations of Social Networks with Physical Activity Enjoyment among Older Adults: Walkability as a Modifier through a STROBE-Compliant Analysis.

The available evidence suggests that social networks can contribute to physical activity (PA) enjoyment, which is necessary for the maintenance of PA over the life course. This study assessed the associations of active and sedentary social networks with PA enjoyment and ascertained whether walkability moderates or modifies these associations. A cross-sectional design compliant with STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) was employed.
