In the present study, we evaluated the influence of maternal and neonatal factors on the efficiency of the placental transfer of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Vaccination during pregnancy provides fetal and neonatal protection through the passive transplacental transfer of maternal neutralizing antibodies. To date, little information is available regarding the factors that affect the transfer of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.

It has been shown that vertical transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 strain is relatively rare, and there is still limited information on the specific impact of maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection on vertical transmission. The current study focuses on a transcriptomics analysis aimed at examining differences in gene expression between placentas from mother-newborn pairs affected by COVID-19 and those from unaffected controls. Additionally, it investigates the in situ expression of molecules involved in placental inflammation.

Background: Severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia can cause hearing impairment. Bilirubin can be deposited in nerve cells, and the brainstem and the 8th nerve are especially sensitive to bilirubin toxicity. Abnormal changes in brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) can be observed, and the BAEP test measures a nerve potential induced by short, high-frequency sound stimulation; thus, it is able to detect damage to the auditory conduction pathway in children.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effects of partial term prelabor rupture of membranes (TPROM) on the spontaneous onset of labor, comparing it with complete TPROM in over 389 women at a French maternity hospital.
  • Findings revealed that only 45% of women with partial TPROM went into spontaneous labor within 24 hours, significantly lower than the 64% for those with complete TPROM.
  • The study concluded that having a partial TPROM increases the likelihood of not going into labor within 24 hours, indicating that residual membranes might delay labor onset.

During pregnancy, two fetomaternal interfaces, the placenta-decidua basalis and the fetal membrane-decidua parietals, allow for fetal growth and maturation and fetal-maternal crosstalk, and protect the fetus from infectious and inflammatory signaling that could lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes. While the placenta has been studied extensively, the fetal membranes have been understudied, even though they play critical roles in pregnancy maintenance and the initiation of term or preterm parturition. Fetal membrane dysfunction has been associated with spontaneous preterm birth (PTB, < 37 weeks gestation) and preterm prelabor rupture of the membranes (PPROM), which is a disease of the fetal membranes.

Background: Due to the incomplete standardization of the etiology and diagnostic criteria for fetal growth restriction (FGR), there has been uncertainty in the early prediction of FGR. The comprehensive estimation of FGR was mainly based on various factors, such as maternal characteristics and medical history, nuchal translucency (NT), and serum biochemical markers [pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and free beta human chorionic gonadotropin (free β-hCG)]. Herein, we performed a retrospective cohort study to investigate the correlation and diagnostic value of maternal markers such as PAPP-A, free β-hCG, and NT in the first trimester with maternal characteristics, so as to provide theoretical basis for perinatal care and the application of low-dose aspirin.
