An increased prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) has been well documented in the South Asian population living worldwide. The prevalence of certain traditional CHD risk factors, like diabetes mellitus and tobacco use, have been on the rise in this ethnic group and likely contribute to the increase in CHD prevalence. Still, a disproportionate excess of CHD exists, and this may be linked to novel CHD risk factors.

Renal artery stenting with noninvasive duplex ultrasound follow-up: 3-year results from the RENAISSANCE renal stent trial.

Objective: The multicenter, single-arm RENAISSANCE trial evaluated outcomes in patients with progressive atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS) treated with the Express Renal Premounted Stent System (Boston Scientific, Natick, MA).

Background: Renal artery stenting may prevent the morbidity and mortality of surgical revascularization and high restenosis rates of percutaneous renal angioplasty (PTRA). Renal artery duplex ultrasonography (DUS) offers an alternative to traditional invasive poststenting angiographic surveillance, though concordance with angiography for in-stent restenosis has yet to be validated independently.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia with thrombosis after endovascular aneurysm repair.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia is an immune-mediated syndrome that results from unfractionated heparin or low molecular weight heparin exposure. It often remains unrecognized and undertreated and can cause limb and/or life-threatening thrombosis. The authors present 2 cases of thrombosis: one arterial and the other venous that occurred following endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Performance goals and endpoint assessments for clinical trials of femoropopliteal bare nitinol stents in patients with symptomatic peripheral arterial disease.

Objective: This analysis proposes safety and performance goals for prospective single-arm trials of bare nitinol stents to treat patients with debilitating claudication associated with femoropopliteal (FP) atherosclerotic lesions.

Background: To date there have been no analyses of clinical trials data to set efficacy and safety benchmarks for new bare nitinol stents in the treatment of claudication from FP disease. Industry has been reluctant to sponsor studies of nitinol stents due to logistical barriers.
