Objective: First, we wanted to dispel the myth that avocados are fattening and therefore should be avoided in energy-restricted diets. Second, we examined the effects of avocados, a rich source of monounsaturated fatty acids, as part of an energy-restricted diet on weight loss, serum lipids, fibrinogen, and vascular function in overweight and obese subjects.
Methods: Sixty-one free-living volunteers (13 men and 48 women), with body mass index of 32 +/- 3.

The LC50 of copper oxychloride for Eisenia fetida was determined, and its effects on biomass change and lysosomal damage using neutral red retention times (NRRT) of coelomocytes were measured. The aim was to establish whether a lysosomal subcellular response, measured as NRRT, could be linked to the LC50 and biomass changes. Further, we attempted to establish the ecological relevance of the LC50 by comparing it to studies previously carried out on the effects of copper oxychloride on field earthworm populations.

Sub-optimal night temperatures below 15 degrees C (dark chilling) frequently reduce soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] production. Nitrate application is known to alleviate some of the negative effects of low root zone temperatures, probably by counteracting the inhibition caused by decreased symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF).

The improved Finapres apparatus, known as the Finometer, measures finger blood pressure noninvasively on a beat-to-beat basis and gives waveform measurements similar to intra-arterial recordings. The Finometer measures brachial pressure and corrects for finger pressure accordingly. It also corrects for the hydrostatic height of the finger with respect to the heart level.

In this study, minitablet and granule formulations were developed as solid oral dosage forms for the delivery of peptide drugs with the absorption enhancer N-trimethyl chitosan chloride (TMC). Minitablets were deemed suitable as a dosage form due to their ability, as components of multiple unit dosage forms (MUDFs), to disperse from each other, before disintegration, effectively increasing the area in which the polymer can assert its absorption-enhancing effect. The polymer should be released from the dosage forms prior to the release of the peptide, which was, together with achieving maximum release of both ingredients, the main focus of this study.

The intent of the study was to prepare and characterize three crystal forms of niclosamide namely the anhydrate and the two monohydrates and to investigate the moisture adsorption and desorption behavior of these crystal forms. The crystal forms were prepared by recrystallization and were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, isoperibol solution calorimetry, Karl Fischer titration, and X-ray powder diffractometry. Moisture adsorption by the anhydrate at increased relative humidities and two temperatures, 30 and 40 degrees C, was measured while the desorption from the monohydrates was determined at 45, 55, and 65 degrees C for monohydrate H(A) and 75, 90, and 100 degrees C for monohydrate H(B).

Inappropriate discontinuation of drug treatment and noncompliance are a leading cause of long-term morbidity during treatment of depression. Increasing evidence supports an association between depressive illness and disturbances in brain glutamate activity, nitric oxide synthesis, and gamma-amino butyric acid. Animal models also confirm that suppression of glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor activity or inhibition of the nitric oxide-cyclic guanosine monophosphate pathway, as well as increasing brain levels of gamma-amino butyric acid, may be key elements in antidepressant action.

For a better understanding of the behaviour of macromolecules in vitro and in vivo, their structural and chemical properties that may be influential as experimental variables need to be characterised. N-Trimethyl chitosan chloride and N-triethyl chitosan chloride have been synthesised from chitosan to increase the solubility range of these polymers. However, little is known about the effect of the degree of quaternisation, molecular weight, viscosity and different substitution groups on the polymer's ability to enhance the transport of large hydrophilic compounds, such as peptide and protein drugs, across intestinal and nasal epithelia and on their toxicity profile.

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterised by hyperarousal, anxiety and amnesic symptoms. Deficits in explicit memory recall have been causally related to volume reductions of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. While stress-related glucocorticoid secretion appears involved in this apparent atrophy, there is also evidence for low plasma cortisol in PTSD.

Previous studies have established that N-trimethyl chitosan chloride (TMC) is a potent absorption enhancer for peptides and large hydrophilic compounds across mucosal surfaces, especially in neutral and basic environments where chitosan is ineffective as an absorption enhancer. The degree of quaternization of TMC plays an important role on its absorption-enhancing properties. Several TMC polymers with different degrees of quaternization were synthesized and the molecular mass of the polymers was determined by SEC/MALLS.
