Substantial gains have been achieved in the control of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the four endemic states of India; however, cases are sporadically reported from other nonendemic regions of India such as the sub-Himalayan region, which can be a hurdle to VL elimination. We analyzed VL reports published from the sub-Himalayan regions of India over seven decades (1967-2023) in this systematic review. Medline, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for VL cases from sub-Himalayan regions of India.

Article Synopsis
  • Cushing's disease leads to higher health risks, and osilodrostat, an oral medication, has shown effectiveness in reducing cortisol levels in patients during two key studies.
  • This analysis included 210 patients, with 27% being of Asian origin; results indicate that both Asian and non-Asian patients showed similar improvements in health measures, although Asian patients required lower doses of osilodrostat.
  • Adverse events (AEs) were common, with Asian patients experiencing more issues related to low cortisol levels and pituitary tumor enlargement compared to their non-Asian counterparts, suggesting greater sensitivity to the treatment in Asian individuals.

Front Ophthalmol (Lausanne)

February 2024

Autoinflammatory Diseases Clinical Unit, Department of Autoimmune Diseases, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, University of Barcelona, Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), Center of the European Reference Network (ERN) for Rare Immunodeficiency, Autoinflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases (RITA), Spanish Center of the Centros, Servicios y Unidades de Referencia (CSUR) and Catalan Center of the Xarxa d'Unitats d'Expertesa Clínica (XUEC) for Autoinflammatory Diseases, Barcelona, Spain.

Autoinflammatory diseases include disorders with a genetic cause and also complex syndromes associated to polygenic or multifactorial factors. Eye involvement is present in many of them, with different extent and severity. The present review covers ophthalmological lesions in the most prevalent monogenic autoinflammatory diseases, including FMF (familial Mediterranean fever), TRAPS (TNF receptor-associated periodic syndrome), CAPS (cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes), Blau syndrome, DADA2 (deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2), DITRA (deficiency of the interleukin-36 receptor antagonist), other monogenic disorders, including several ubiquitinopathies, interferonopathies, and the recently described ROSAH (retinal dystrophy, optic nerve edema, splenomegaly, anhidrosis, and headache) syndrome, and VEXAS (vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic) syndrome.

Article Synopsis
  • Pure neuritic leprosy (PNL) is often underdiagnosed due to the lack of effective diagnostic methods, prompting a study to evaluate the use of multiplex polymerase chain reaction (MPCR) on less invasive samples like skin biopsies and nasal swabs.
  • In a sample of 30 untreated patients with suspected PNL, MPCR detected Mycobacterium leprae DNA in 60% of skin samples and 53% of nasal swabs, compared to lower rates using traditional RLEP-PCR.
  • The study found that MPCR is a more reliable and less invasive option for diagnosing M. leprae in PNL cases and could improve detection rates in clinically suspected patients.
