Department of Orthopedics, School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Taipei Medical University, Taipei City, Taiwan.

Article Synopsis
  • Distal radius orientation plays a crucial role in assessing Colles' fractures, which typically occur when the wrist is protected by a bandage, splint, or cast.
  • Radiology technicians face challenges in obtaining accurate anteroposterior and lateral view X-rays due to these protective measures.
  • This study developed a mathematical model to calculate the necessary pronation angle for achieving the correct dorsal tilt in lateral X-rays, with formulas integrated into Excel for easier application.

Article Synopsis
  • Laparoscopic radical nephroureterectomy (LNU) is becoming a standard treatment for localized upper tract urothelial cancer (UTUC), with hand-assisted LNU potentially offering quicker surgery times than pure LNU.
  • A study analyzed data from 629 patients in Taiwan treated with either hand-assisted (515 patients) or pure LNU (114 patients), comparing various survival outcomes between the two methods.
  • The findings indicated that while both approaches had similar all-cause and cancer-specific mortality rates, the pure laparoscopic method showed a significantly lower chance of intra-vesical recurrence and better bladder recurrence-free survival compared to the hand-assisted approach.

Urinary sodium potassium ratio is associated with clinical success after adrenalectomy in patients with unilateral primary aldosteronism.

Ther Adv Chronic Dis

February 2021

Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, Cleveland Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Cleveland, OH, USA Department of Urology, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan.

Background: The urinary sodium potassium (NaK) ratio is associated with dietary sodium and potassium intake and blood pressure, and it also reflects the activity of aldosterone. Herein we evaluated the value of the urinary NaK ratio in predicting the surgical outcomes of patients with unilateral primary aldosteronism (uPA).

Methods: This non-concurrent prospective cohort study was conducted from 2011 to 2017 and included 241 uPA patients who had undergone adrenalectomy.

Introduction: Convalescence after hernia repair is one of the main focuses for hernia surgeons. We analyzed our prospectively collected data to identify possible predictive factors for post-operative acute and chronic pain.

Materials And Methods: We prospectively collected the demographic data and peri-operative findings.

View Article and Find Full Text PDF

Background: Since the introduction of robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery, a variety of conventional laparoscopic procedures have been explored via this approach. In the robotic era, most of the reported robot-assisted laparoscopic hernia repairs were performed with the trans-abdominal pre-peritoneal approach. According to the evidence extrapolated from laparoscopic ventral hernia repair, simultaneous fascial defect closure and mesh repair can significantly decrease the risk of seroma formation and recurrence over those without fascial closure.

J Bone Miner Res

April 2017

Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, USA.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is associated with increased urinary calcium excretion and osteoporosis prevalence. We studied the long-term effect of hyperaldosterone on fracture risk and possible risk mitigation via treatments, by comparing PA patients and their essential hypertension (EH) counterparts extracted by propensity score match. We used a longitudinal population database from the Taiwan National Health Insurance, and used a validated algorithm to identify PA patients diagnosed in 1997-2010.
